  1. The jib / drone comparison is ridiculous. The Movi is a fad. It will soon fade away. At least from the hands of turdburglars like Chase Jarvis. Carbon fiber and hexagonal design go a long way to sell overpriced units. I worked with the Movi guys on a Taylor Swift concert. The director was disgusted with its performance. It was a jittery mess full of taped on Hex keys to balance a too large camera that the kid could barely hold up for more than 30 seconds. Funny how no one brings up these topics to me in person.
  2. Just wanted to make sure it was dead and that I killed it. 2 things I learned from this thread: The tiffen patent on the "Lynn Axis" is worthless I'm an idiot
  3. I put a Ronin on top of my rig. Should I expect a call from a patent attorney?
  4. For me it was my left right adjustment on the socket block.
  5. Those handwheels are $4300??? How are they more than an actual used Worral Gearhead?
  6. How did you know, Ron? Luckily your moms ass is so huge I can balance my laptop on it while I post this.
  7. Sheesh, I started this post asking if anyone had seen the AlexMos based self leveling horizon. I never expected it to turn into this. Since I had an Alexmos board laying around and a motor. I decided to mount the camera to the motor and put it on top of my stage. And shoot a video of it. What I discovered from this is: -There is a huge feud between parties claiming they invented the AR. -I splash around in a small birdbath. -The top operators in the world are in this forum. Thank you everyone for crapping all over me. I totally understand that I am the bearer of bad news when a 13 year feud for an overpriced innovation can be replaced in 20 minutes for $200. I'm glad I started this thread. It has been quite enlightening.

  9. What I was comparing was skill sets. Apples and stove bolts are 2 different things. But, owning and operating an apple orchard and owning and operating a stove bolt company are similar. You source supplies, make the best product you can, and sell it. Just as pulling the emergency release on the vest does not make you a Steadicam operator, nor does performing cpr make you a doctor. These are individual procedures that can be taught in minutes. Versus a career in medicine or Steadicam operating or violin playing whereas you only get better, learn more, with every time you do it. Yes, Science is in the air every time we operate, but not on set. I would say 95% of crew would be hard pressed to define most of those terms. How many directors/dp's have you had to explain to how shadows work? How reflections work? How many times have you been asked about the gyros? I had a grip ask me once " how does your crane balance like that?" Understand that we now live in a world where the user of a piece of equipment has little to no knowledge of how it works. Peter, how many times have you alcohol swabbed the drum on a VTR? How many mags have you loaded? How many cables have you made? You must have adjusted Gamma with a tweaker on a camera at some point. Required a Steadimag because the weight displacement of a 400' take? Now, when was the last time you saw a DP open up an F55? I mean, removing the media from the camera does not even alter its balance in any significant way. And more importantly, the DP has NO IDEA what is going on inside the camera. NONE. A film camera had a motor, that turned a spool of film, while also pulling it down with a claw, pausing briefly, exposing it to light, and so on. Nowadays, Ask a DP "How does your Epic work?" But don't do it while he is updating the firmware, because it could brick the camera. "Film" making was artisan, now it is mostly pedestrian. If we are going to post diagrams . let's not overwhelm.....
  10. Let's not go sucking each others d&&ks just yet. (little ones, according to Jessica Lopez) We move a camera around on a stick held by springs. There are people that operate on babies in utero. People that went to the moon. Calling this "science" is high schooly at best. Don't let the oohs and ahhs from the p.a.'s when you undock go to your head. This may be the Summer Shandy speaking, Tomorrow, I might make an AR. 15 that is, not revolution.
  11. You give me too much credit, lol. I should have been more clear: The one that I made was only a few hundred dollars. I own a 3 axis cnc mill btw and only had to make a small plate to interface between the motor and camera mount. And for years i've been telling my wife my browsing the internet is precious R&D, at least to the tune of $100,000.. Keeping horizon with a motor is no longer a big deal or a technological feat in 2014. ANYONE can do it. Here's 3 axes of 32 bit stabilization for $300. http://aerialpixels.com/shop/gimbals/alexmos-32bit-3-axis-brushless-gimbal-controller-basecam/ I look forward to seeing your version. PS this post is worth at least $72
  12. That's an AlexMos controller and a $25 brushless motor. About $200 bucks total.
