  1. Another thought is that with a First Class ticket you extra baggage and weight benefits, not to mention a better seat. Sometimes it's almost the same to fly first as it is to fly coach and pay excess.

As an extension of this thought, which is definitely accurate it's also worth noting some airlines have moved to a single highest fee system, I've flown my Magliner which is 100lbs for 100 dollars. With this system its some times the same cost to fly with gear as it is to FedEx Ground it, and that's not even looking at media rates.

I know Air Canada and Alaska moved to this system and that United hasn't, also worth noting, you fall under the baggage policy of the first leg of your trip, so if I flew from Vancouver to Toronto to Chicago, the first leg Vancouver - Toronto is Air Canada so you fall under their baggage policy on the way there, but Chicago - Toronto leg is United so on the way back you get beat up by their fees.

  2. There are crazy lodging and airfare deals in Las Vegas right now. For those of you who have Alegiant Airlines some of the rates are as low as $40 each way from the smaller markets.

I think I flew for $12 last year from Bellingham which is like a 30-45 minute drive from Vancouver and the customs is faster driving vs flying, so it was like a win 3x over. Airfare from Vancouver was like $300. It wasn't too bad either really, I expected a lot worse for $12.

  3. I'm not really sure what form an app would take for a forum...

The only thing I think you could add is Push Notifications, but that could be done via an RSS feed app.

Sorry to rain on the parade,

    Steve

You can RSS this forum already, no need for an app

RSS reader for iPhone is what I meant, sorry for any confusion.

Unless I missed a RSS function i the iPhone's version of Safari

  4. I'm afraid I don't have experience with US/UK but I do with CND/US, so I might be able to help with afew of these.

Anyone have any experience taking gear to the UK without a Carnet? I fly out at 7am tomorrow and it seems that getting a Carnet is a bit out of the question.

You'd be right, last I checked you need to be bonded to get one and that takes at least a week.

I am actually only taking my wireless follow focus and video so I can keep it rather small and hope for a green light. Any idea my chances of that working?

I've taken my full package across with no problem as long as I prove I'm not crossing to sell the gear, it'll depend on how reasonable the officer is/how much they like doing paperwork. Be prepared to explain exactly what it is you do and half of them don't seem to watch TV or films so that can be fun. They usually like to know how much the gear costs, usually it's safe to under shoot the used sale value by 10-20%, depends how ballsy you are, they don't really have any way of knowing. They'll usually want to inspect at least one case. If you tell them your broker told you that you don't need a carnet, that seems to help.

What kind of paperwork and red tape will be necessary when I get there if they decide to question my gear?

They could decide to charge you whatever duties that they'd normally charge on imported gear from the US. I'm pretty sure they can seize your gear until you get a Carnet, I'm not completely sure on that point.

From what I have read some sort of deposit is required but that it really requires getting some sort of broker involved.

I'm pretty sure that's the carnet, which is usually 40% gear value and yes you'll want a broker if nothing else just to maintain your sanity.

As far as getting my gear back into the US I am bringing receipts to prove that it all origionated in the US. The US customs website suggests that this should work.

Should work, when I bring gear to/from US, as long as I have the paper work proving I've already paid CND import then I'm fine.

I don't know if this helps any, but again all of my experience is US/CND which I'd imagine is wildly different than US/UK.

  5. Yea its retail only, but still neat.

I also build my desktops from scratch, but really, in comparison to the full market, homemade is a pretty small percentage, sure you know many people who make their own, but how many people do you know that don't, lots of people are content with the $500 dollar netbooks or the $400 e-machines you can pick up at Best Buy.

  6. So Apple is playing dirty, software implementable from OS 3.0 like the voice activation and video recording won't be enabled on the 3G version, only the 3GS, at least right now, wouldn't be surprised to see that change. Although if your jailbroken its moot.

  7. iPhone 3G-S

Features not included with the upcoming 3.0 firmware and exclusive to the iPhone 3G-S include: HSDPA (data at 7.2Mbps, twice the speed of current 3G service), video camera, focus-capable built-in 3MP camera, video editing capability, voice command throughout the phone ("play songs by The Beatles" or "call Mom")... and the potentially useful digital compass (I'll hold out for the digital astrolabe). Apple indicates the 3G-S will show base performance increases twice that of the 3G, notably in app launching, message launching and Safari browsing. Also, battery life is said to be improved.

Glad I held off on the first gen 3g, although I was reallllllly hoping for that matte finish that was floating around in rumors.

  8. Does anybody know what the actual resolution of the display is? I could not find anything, not even in the manual....

    Tiffen's UBII is 800x600......

I was told this at NAB too... ugh

For some reason I think its XGA 1024x768, but I wouldn't take that to the bank.

  9. Ahh Erwin what would we do without your picture library?

You might also want to try the US Patent Office for 3a schematics if you go the home brewed route, might have what you want.
