  1. Hi everyone,

So, today I actually called Tiffen technical support about the harsh vibrations I'm getting while trying to run with my Pilot and was told the vibrations were due to the Manfrotto quick-release plate I am using. This afternoon, I tried mounting my EX1 directly to the top stage camera plate and still have the exact same vibrations. As a secondary test, I tried stomping my foot on the ground while standing still and lightly pounding the socket block with my fist as if you were pounding it on a table. It didn't matter whether my hands were on the rig or not, both of these tests produced noticeable vibrations and image jitters that lasted almost a second, even at the widest angle zoom. From these tests, it almost seems like the arm is the problem, but I can't see how. I'm not sure if my rig actually has a defect or if the rig was just not built to withstand the rigors of running.

Is anyone else who uses a Pilot experiencing these same problems?

    Hi Adam,

the steadicam pilot is designed and built to withstand the rigors of running. I have watched the clip you have published on Vimeo. You have checked the quick release plate and it’s OK. A question: do you “feel” the vibrations in the gimbal (hands)? If yes, it could be an arm’s issue. If not, it could be the gimbal that transfers the vibrations to the post. You can see at www.ciakframe.com/runningshotsteadicampilot.htm a shot I have done running (not very fast). Have you checked with SteadyShot Image Stabilization on and off?

  2. :( * Bad News * !!

I just went to the shop to pick up the pilot.

It looked really nice ... a big bagpack and in it the Pilot.

Then I asked about the wheights ... There was nothing there.

So it seemed that it was not complete. An Allen key and other screws were also not inside. pff

Then the called another shop of them to ask if they still have a pilot on stock but that was not the case.

I asked them how long it would take to have it delivered.

The price I had to pay for the complete VLB System is 3.700 Euro.

Then they told me that it would take up to 6 weeks to have another pilot delivered. BUT that it's going

to be a new model and it will cost 4.400 Euro.

Then I told them that I have just sold my Steadicam to pick up this Pilot because I have a production in

3 days. (ok ... that was a little lie  , but I wanted them to come up with a solution for it).

So they told me that they also had a Steadicam Merlin in the store and now they are going to get

the wheights and screws from that Merlin. I told them that I am having a Canon XHA1 for the steadicam

and they are going to build it up with an XHA1 to see if everything is working and everything is complete.

So I have to give them a call in about 2 hours. Hopefully they will have some good news for me.

First I was thinking of cancelling my purchase there because I saw that Adorama and BH had some Pilots

in store, but it's Usa. So I'm a little bit afraid about the connectors, power outlets etc.

So now I'm just waiting and meanwhile I'll just keep myself busy with watching the EFP Training Video. :P

Is there a new model of the Pilot ?

  3. Hi all,

I have recently watched “The last kiss” (2001), directed by Gabriele Muccino (Seven Pounds (2008) - The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)). Operating steadicam is an art and steadicam operators are artists such as actors, actresses, directors, directors of photography, music composers, editors, etc). The name of the steadicam operator Sebastiano de Pascalis is in the main titles.

  4. Hi Jay,

thanks for the reply and comments. Congratulations on your purchase: the Steadicam Pilot is a great rig and you will have many satisfactions using it. About the video I have published, I think there are some problems about holding horizon during panning, headroom and tilting. When I make a video and I watch the montage the first time, I am satisfied, but watching and watching? and studying camera movements in the shots?.I realize errors and that steadicam operating needs a lot of practice. Thanks for your compliments about my video.

  5. Hi Afton,

thanks for the reply and comments. I?m actually not fully satisfied about the dynamic balance I am able to achieve, but I also think that the most important thing is that I have to make a lot of practice and exercises and I?ll follow your suggestions in the next shooting. I would like to use an havier camera to have more ?allied inertia? and in the meantime I add the Pilot weights on the stage. I congratulate you on the web site ?steadishots? you have published: it?s a great source to study and understand the art of operating staedicam.

  6. Hello Everyone,

my name is Amedeo, I live in Milan, Italy and I?m a Steadicam enthusiast. One year ago I have bought a Steadicam Merlin and recently I have upgraded to a Steadicam Pilot. I have started to practise with the Pilot and when I will have a montage ready I will certainly post it. You can see a video made with the Merlin handheld on my web site at www.ciakframe.com in the video-entertainment section.
