  1. Yea the original Flyer had a 2pin lemo from memory. Im not sure you really need to power the 5D from the sled, just use the batteries, You need all the weight you can get up there when it comes to DSLRs.

From memory Pete's hofo RX has an XLR power input, so you could just start off by using a 2 pin lemo to XLR cable and you'd be away laughing.

  2. I've done it on the flyer with light weight stills lenses - Thats a 24mm Nikon. My Heden is on the other side.

No wireless link, no mattebox, no external recorder. Just an Audio Link & BFD, so yes all very basic.

There still was room to move on the arm though, I almost added a 3kg weight plate, but I ran out of time (48hour film comp)

Wouldnt want to do it with a Pilot though.

  3. Bumping in the hope of some new info to mull over. Unfortunately I did not make it to CineGear to see the monitor as a friend of mine passed away and i was unable to travel.

I've got an insanely good exchange rate going with the USD right now, so its a good time to purchase, Keen to wait and see the new housing though.

    Hope all's going to plan.

  4. Yea that'd do the job, although it doesn't give you as much mounting placement when it comes to the camera on the actual plate.

Because SLR glass is so short you'll want the 5D right at the front on any plate you buy or else you won't be able to get the motor in the right spot to engage.

Attached is a picture of a quick and dirty 5D shoot i did awhile back with my Flyer Le, 5D, 21mm ZF and the Zacuto Plate, you'll also see I have a manfrotto QR plate between the zacuto plate and the camera body.

Its not the great QR but it does the job, the Really Right Stuff plates are better.

No motor on there as they didnt have a budget for a 1st.. and 21mm on full frame stopped down is fine.. kinda.

  5. Cheers guys glad you like it.

If definitely was fun working in that set, art department had a lot of fun making it.

Spoke to the director today and turns out making the cut and changing the ending was the clients idea.. Lets just say theres a directors cut version that im going to get a hold of.

The width of the lens made the shot easier, the whole spin around the shelf with the glass jars on it was good fun.. had to hold right to the last moment on the body pan as she walks past camera towards it.. and then accelerate all the way around to get into the position behind the shelf..

Lining her up down the damn hole in the wood was very tricky and unfortunately that final take wasn't the best version of the line up.. but it worked.. i really wish we hadn't seen that practical light above her.

A hit the rig on the table a number of times at the end as it was shaking.. blowing it right at the end sucks! I also had the large glass jar fall on my LCD screen as it fell off the table.. it didnt fall far and everything was fine. After that we put the large jay on the left hand side of the table.

FYI the shaking table was of course real as were the jars moving.. good old fishing line!

    Fun times.

  6.

    Canon 5D with a 16mm lens at about f10. 1080 25p slowed down by 50% in post.

    Steadicam Pilot.

Shot the whole thing double time, had a lot of fun working in that amazing set that our Art Dept built.

It was originally meant to be one shot after the CG intro ends.. but i guess either the director, band or label decided they needed to fly out as well.. hence the cut right at the end.. oh well.

Let me know what you think. Definitely worth watching in HD on youtube.

  7. Joe, I always shoot with a quick release on the Pilot, done many with EX1, never seen a problem.

exactly my point.. im still not 100% sure its a mounting thing.. Nick has never had any vibration issues.. that running shot of his is amazing.

  8. I've had vibration issues forever with the pilot.

see here - http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/stabilizers-steadicam-etc/144903-dark-hallway-shot.html shame i deleted that video..

Im almost 100% sure its due to how you mount cameras to the stop stage of the pilot.

I get vibration with both my HVX200 and my EX1.. dont get it with my 7D though.. and thats running a zaucto baseplate & mattebox.

How solid is everyones monitors on the pilot sled? mine has play in it.. and can wiggle back and forward slightly. The hole in the monitor mount for its pivot pin is larger than the pin itself.

Steadicam say dont use a QR plate.. which i havent done in over a year.. but then i hear from a lot of other people that its worth doing and fixes the issues.. tests i've done show otherwise.

I've learnt to live with it, it does suck however, still wanting to upgrade to an a2.. but steadi work is slow right now so im just holding tight.

  9. Make sure when you get to the point of using a follow focus motor that you use a single piece rail for your motor. As flexible as the Zacuto rail system is, if you use a few rails screwed together, the motor can easily spin when operating. Zacuto does sell some longer rails but the choice is limited. Cinevate has some lengthy single piece carbon fibre 15mm rails that you may wish to consider.

Good to know Andrew, thanks, the standard rods it comes with are 12's, which are definitely long enough to get a motor on, and depending on the lens.. possibly a mattebox.

Will have a look into the cinevate ones however.

    Joe

  10. Cool Adam, have Scott see me, I'll be at the Tiffen booth. I'll give him my Flyer LE Vs. Archer 2 Vs. other options spiel.

Currently in the same boat as the OP.

Will come and join in on the conversation you have with Scott as i said i'd catch up with him at NAB anyway.

although i already know the answer to this question... its just an expensive one.

  11. - HD Version

Steadicam Pilot - Canon 7D w/ Tokina 11-16.. Ran the lens at 16mm, f6.3. ISO 2000. No focus control! agh.

Learnt a lot of things on this video, 1 - Frame guides.. tape some on!

The rig weighed nothing and had a drop time of about 1.5 seconds, however the whole thing was so last minute i had no time to get a weight plate made.. something that is on the cards right now.

Its amazing how slow it looks on playback.. i remember running a lot faster.

I started the setup in missionary as she walks onto the stage and came around the band. Switched right before she leaves the mic and we go down the stairs.. steep little bastards those were.

Don Juan all the way down the stairs to the bench with the girl on it. Switched back to missionary here.

And then backwards missionary for the rest of the video... fun times.

I really wish i could have gone wider in places but the artist would not allow me to shoot anything wider than an MCU... oh well.

Let me know what you think.
