  1. Louis;

I have been on an HD show for the past 6 months ("Rescue Me"), and I have used my Transvideo on it very successfully for that time.  I guess the importance or value of the Blackbird/Hummingbird is the quality of picture at a price that is affordable.  The real criticism I have of my Transvideo is that I am constantly working around the brightness/contrast issue.  With the Hummingbird, I don't have to fiddle to get the angle where I want/ need it to see the shot.  So if it means using a down converter with the monitor and getting a great picture or  not using a downconverter and getting the same old LCD image, I think I'll opt for the down convert.

Until someone comes out with a monitor that is as bright and affordable for HD work, I think I'll keep waiting for the Blackbird.

For the price they want for the hummingbird for just a little more you can buy a TB6 . At the end of the day I know which one I would go with. I have been told the ERG LCD monitors are also very good Is any one useing it on there rigs

    just my 2 cents worth

  2. I have been taking to Guy Genin from ZGC (the people who bring you Cooke Lenses in the US)

who has informed me that ZGC is now a distributor for the Hummingbird and the BlackBird.

He asked to to poll the East Coasters in the Forum to see if we would like to have another get together to take a look at the monitor.

So here I go!  Anyone interested in and available to get together and see the monitor in the next several weeks?  He is interested in getting as many operators together as possible, so let me know, or BETTER YET........ call him directly at 973 335-4460.

    Hi everyone

Apart from the Humming bird and the Blackbird It would be great if the steadicam guild could have a night with all the other LCD monitors side by side inc the Transvideo 6"cinemonitor ,Teletest, the panasonic Hd ,The ERG HD/SDI and the Ultra Brute and any other Monitor as well for that matter . What do you think Dave ,Dan ??

Why is everyone talking up the Hummingbird Yes it may be a great LCD monitor

but it can n't view HD I am finding more jobs down here are going HD then 16mm these days I have been looking at buying a LCD's for some time now

If and when I go LCD it will have to be switchable std/HD

just my 2 cents on the subject

  3. Hi all

I worked on the TV series Ponderosa (prequil series to Bonanza), with the Panavised Sony HD Cameras, straight from Star Wars Ep 2.

The camera worked great with the Miranda, but the Focus Puller had the Panatape, Short Zoom, 2 focus motors and the cable loom from hell (including vision, CCU and sound cables for recording sound to camera and Dat, so we had a boom op following also) running back to the TD's truck. I had the gimble at the highest possible position, the post at full stick and i still had to add weight to be base of my then Pro 1 to get a static balance.

To add insult to injury, we were in the worst possible conditions as far as working, rain, hail, mud, snow and sun all in the one day, as well as days of each.

The arm worked fine until the final shot of the day when it said "I've had ENOUGH" and the top 2 trunions on my 3a arm literally snapped in half while i was taking the sled off the stand. A quick dash to the grip truck and several standard bolts through the top bones and I was back on set within 5mins to get the final shot.

Luckaly the director (who was also following and standing next to me) or myself was not hurt, but it just shows how easily it could happen. But at the end of the day, the director was happy with the shots.

I have now upgraded to a Steadyrig Silver Springs Arm and can now fly any camera (including the above) with ease.

In my 15 years of Steadicam Operating, this was the heaviest camera setup i have ever flown.

Will attach photos when i can find it.

  4. Do any of you remember a couple of posts in previous years about an Italian book on Steadicam? Just wondering if the english version ever materialised or if anyone knows of any plans to release it? I think the author was a guy named David Ballerini.

There was also mention of a book on the making of "Heat" in the forum a few years back: somebody was online looking for Jimmy Muro's number so they could do a follow up interview with him? Any sign of that book?

    Hi Stephen

The only book on steadicam that I know is Serena Ferrara "Steadicam Techniqes & Aesthetics Printed by Focal Press

    Great read
