  1. How did you find out the Navy was selling an EFP?
  2. Here is a photo. Those are 18" rods with battery and hard drive extended all the way out. This helps a bit. Not as much as I would have hoped though. I will load the red down tomorrow and see what happens. thanks for help everyone
  3. I took the Floater Buddy 3000 workshop out of Key West, Florida. just kidding I went to Rockport for the Tiffen workshop. I don't think I explained myself very well. The pan axis is extremely fast and sensitive. Even if I spread the masses to extremes it is still way too sensitive. Imagine the differences you feel between a lightweight pilot and a fully loaded ultra. The ultra feels really solid requires more force to pan and tilt. Its easy to get a smooth pan or tilt. The pilot is really susceptible to the slightest pressures in its axis. It requires an extremely light touch to get smooth shots. My rig feels more like a pilot in its pan axis and I am flying a RED on it. Perhaps adding more overall weight to the rig would help. I am going to experiment today and let you know what I find. Also it is a 2-inch post/gimbal.
  4. Just got back from a workshop and am spoiled from flying ultras and clippers for a week. Its back to the real world with my actioncam red edition. I have spread the masses a far as humanly possible on this rig yet the gimbal is super fast and sporty with pans. And also the slightest bit of pressure from my thumb or finger will move the frame unacceptably in a walk and talk or tracking shot. How can I stiffen the gimbal so it requires more pressure to move in the pan axis. I have a very light touch. I have spread the masses. Thanks everybody
  5. Are their any standard practices for stablilizing a steadicam shot in post? Like pan and scan or matchmoving to stabilize a shot that might have some unwanted movement. Errors, bumps etc. Or does the editor just live with the shot bumps and all? thanks for your 2 cents
  6. I am 27 and this is my second job on steadicam. Shooting with a RED and the whole rig comes in at about 35-40 lbs maybe more. The injury is not permanent and the last time i got it was about 9 months ago. Just a pain that happens about once a year for a few days. No beach. Just a straight up walk and talk. I think I am going to take it easy and take some pills and do the job. It is a really good opportunity for me at this point in my career. It is a small independent feature where I can make some decent connections for living in the middle of the country. I can rest after the shoot I suppose.
  7. Had a rough day playing with my nephew yesterday and woke up with a strained lower back. I can walk but I can't hardly bend over or pick anything up. I have a shoot in 2 days. It usually is about 3-4 days before my back gets over this type of injury. They can't afford to bring another operator in. It is a short walk and talk and it will be outside. Forecast calls for rain so I might be off the hook. It will probably take 20-30 minutes in the in the rig to shoot. Real short and simple shot. Should I ask them to push that scene back a few more days? Should I take some muscle relaxors just before the shoot, shoot it and then heal up after the shot? I know I probably shouldn't do this but I might have to. What can I do in the meantime to get my back healed up as quickly as possible? Would you inform the producer of an injury when you could still work but probably shouldn't work? Thanks all
  8. Typically what is the longest lens you use with steadicam? Also what is the longest lens you have ever been asked to use? The longest I have ever shot with was 100mm. That footage was chopped up considerably. Are you ever asked to shoot long takes with long lenses? Just Curious
  9. We had to get the piano out at the end of the shoot so we decided to play around a bit.
  10. We actually took out one section of lights. I tracked along and waited for the opening and went through the ring during the breakdown and out again when the opening came around the other end. Didn't quite work out though.
  11. Hey everybody, This was my first job as an operator. It was shot on the RED with the Actioncam RED edition. Andrew Palermo, the director, and friends built the ring that band is inside and had four friends dressed in black powering it like a merry go round running around it. I was running the with and against the ring as it was spinning. Andrew's inspiration for this video was to create a zoetrope effect. The director didn't want to shoot any wider than 50mm. So we mostly used 50mm and 100mm lenses. Which was frightening for me when he told me. It took two long fun days to complete the shooting. Their are some cool crane shots too. Thanks for checking it out. Watch it in full screen. white rabbits - percussion gun Michael Wilson
  12. thanks that'll work. i never knew of thin BNC but I'm going wireless as soon as I can afford it.
  13. Attached some BNC to the RED. The connection at the camera is on the back right side of the camera. I balanced the rig in order to accept the weight of the cable and maintain level. the rig is balanced although it wants to pan right. It doesn't roll or anything just pan. I tied the BNC off at my vest for seperation from the wrangler and gave myself a coulple of feet so it won't pull on the camera. It is annoying but not affecting my operating. The slightest grip from my hand will knock it out. Am I doing something wrong? thanks
  14. I posted some pics of what I have come up with for lo mode the other day in another thread. lo mode
  15. Here are some more pics. What do you guys think? I might try something else I kind of forgot about the whole CG issue. It balanced so nicely that it really didn't enter my mind.
  16. I used this element technica cheese plate handle that was sitting around the office. It connects to universal mounts on the RED. It does the job. How do I make an attachment so the image isn't huge like this?
  17. Thanks so much for the responses. I can visualize it a bit better now. I will get back to practicing and maybe post another video in the future.
  18. Hi, Here is a video of myself walking forward and backward. Please give me any feedback on my form if you can. I won't be able to take a workshop until july so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I have been practicing with the actioncam red edition for about a month now. I am constantly reviewing the sections of jerry's book on form and balance and will continue to do so until I feel very confident about my form. The last shot is of me with my hands off the post and arm. I have been practicing like that to get my balance in check. thanks click here
  19. Thanks I'll give it a shot. And let you know how this works.
  20. I am flying a red. My biggest concern is not breaking anything and doing it right. I have a good idea but wanted to get some thoughts from others.
  21. How would one go about doing this? thanks
  22. Where can I find "Brian's guide?" I have the manual in PDF form is this what you are talking about? thanks, michael
  23. Just received the book yesterday. Can't put it down. Great job.
