  1. Diego at www.MyCaseBuilder.com was great to me. I ordered new custom foam for my sled case. Designed it online with their software and then worked further with him on the wheel cutouts. Everything came out great and fit like a glove. Cost me $190 including the Fail Safe ($8) that they offer in case you mess up on the measuring. Very useful to me and definitely worth it.

Hope this helps with anyone looking to do this in the future.

  2. Janice, thanks again for trying to help. I would just suggest being more careful of language you use when communicating online is all. We can forget about everything else and move on.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I agree with what the general consensus is that if you feel chest pains you should seek medical advice first and foremost. Even though I mostly fly a lightweight rig, I've been flying for over 5 years and thousands of hours so I know how my steadicam is supposed to feel. The reason i fly a pilot is because I mostly shoot events and require a rig that I can wear for 5+ hours without a break so even 26lbs really begins to take it's toll after a while. As Mark mentioned the pilot vest is not comfortable as bigger rigs I've flown. It might not be a design issue with the steadicam or improper form or wearing of the vest but rather an inherent reality of wearing a restrictive vest for such long periods of time in the summer heat.

Janice's language was quite fine. Your responses back...not so much. Step back, cut out being defensive and take it as advice from someone that actually cares.

I do hope the chest pains never come back.

    Best of luck,

    Kat

  3. Inviting all operators:

After speaking to a few ops, we figured it would be nice to have a holiday get together. Drink, geek out, drink, share stories, drink, play some pool, darts... maybe?

    Date: Sunday, December 14th

    Start Time: 3pm

End Time: 7pm but who knows, really?

    Place: Josie Woods Pub

11 Waverly Place, New York, NY 10003

    http://www.josiewoodsnyc.com/

The pub has the typical bar menu, in case you want something to go down with whatever it is you may be drinking. If you aren’t an East Coast Op and happen to be in our lovely city, please come.

Who’s in? We would like to give the pub a rough number.

Thanks a bunch and hope to see you there.

  4. Congrats,

Glad everything worked out, Now you can say you are a Non Dyke on a Bike member =)

Thank you for your help. Definitely going to suggest shipping batteries first from now on. Not worth the hassle.

Am I the first "non Dyke on a Bike member?" Maybe? Does getting hit on count?

  5. Thanks Peter! You've always been super supportive and I can't fully express my appreciation in words. Big hugs when I see you next.

Firstly, Daniele Massaccesi is A Camera and regular Steadicam Op on "Sense 8." He helped me get a feel for what the Wachowskis liked and answered any questions I had. John Toll was also very helpful and informative. Both a pleasure to work with.

For this particular scene they required a female operator, due to the strict rules of the Dykes on Bikes club in San Fran. The stunt coordinator and vehicle owner worked with me on our prep day. All of us making sure I was safe and comfortable on the bike. Speed rail with cushion was beyond important. I was told I didn't need it since the parade was only 15min. I pushed for it anyway and I'm glad I did. Ended up driving around on it for two hours.

Camera was F55 with Fuji 19-90 with FIZ. We played between 50 & 90 but mostly at 90... so that was fun. Aileen, my first AC was amazing. Kudos to her on a job well done. Aside from my rig almost being taken out by a badly aimed fire hydrant hose, it was an amazing time! Pride weekend in San Francisco was an unforgettable experience in itself.

Thank you to all you ops for all the useful information you have shared.

  6. This has also happened to me, mainly because my vest was a bit too long. Only thing I can think is that your vest is too long or maybe your front pads are placed wrong. Take pics of yourself in the vest with a rig on. I'm sure Chris can help.

Also, if you work with that director again, get him/her in the rig first. Maybe, they'll be more understanding and not expect you to just stand there if it's not necessary. :)

  7. Try Meg Schrock here in NYC. If you need an introduction or her info, contact me off the forum.

Thanks Alec. I may have access to one this weekend. I will contact you for her info if it doesn't work out.

    Love the forum!

  8. Oh and while you there? DONT, again DONT try the arm and sled. Its gonna wanna get you one

Sounds like a good excuse to take a trip there. I'll make sure not try any new toys. May get jealous of all you Pro peeps.

  9. I would like to buy a new vest and before I make my purchase I would like to try out a Pro vest. Is there anyone in the NYC area with a Pro that would allow me to try it out for a day? It may be a hard task considering I am 5'3", fairly small compared to most ops.

    Thank you.

  10. I have my F-3 in front of me now with the latest firmware v 1.31 and S-Log 4444 Dual Link Upgrade.

Just to confirm: you CAN output and record HD-SDI signals and SD-composite signals (output only) at the same time.

The setting for that is as follows:

    1. Set the SD/HDMI/iLink I/O Select to SD HDMI i & DVCam

    2. Set the Dual Link & Gamma Select to 1.5G YPbPr 422 & S-log

Tada, now you can output HD-SDI (through HD SDI A ) and SD composite (Through Video OUT and HDMI OUT) at the same time.

You CAN'T however output a HD HDMI signal at the same time, so I guess external recording is limited to the HD-SDI port.

That's why I love the F-3: It just has all the buttons and outputs you would want from a camera.

However, this might be an S-log Upgrade feature, so it might not work on all cameras.

    Hope this helps!

    Best,

    Nico

Thanks for the info Nico. Copied your settings exactly and it worked great!

  11.

    Kat,

I own both of them, but they are definitely not designed for Steadicam.

The Grip Factory Munich tilt plate is fantastic, and I use it mainly on a geared head, if I do not want to mess with the integrated wedge plate on the Panahead or Arrihead. It is a very stable solution with a hand crank.

As Ron points out ... they are really heavy, and raise your camera height substantially when not in use.

    Fortunately I have an Ultra2 ... :D

I hear good things about the Baer Bel tilt plate (Kat Griller ?? ;) )

Sorry, just saw this. Thanks for the input. The search continues...

  12. I know you mentioned the catgriller (dogcatcher?) one, but the Panther plate is over 3 lbs and the GF plate is over 5. Seems Markus' plate would be much lighter and better suited for steadicam?

That is pretty nice. The one I saw had different pegs for different tilt heights. Like Jerry said though, I wonder if it fits my dovetail.

    Brian,

The purpose of it is for those times I need it constantly tilted, ie: for headroom and/or avoiding lights or glare above the talents head.

    Thanks,

    Kat

  13. If you are talking about tilting a camera while flying it on your rig, you either need a Tiffen Rig or this:

    http://www.betz-tools.com/acc_tiltplate.php

I don't remember what the details of Tiffen's patent are and if this is a violation of it or not, since it's not actually integrated into the sled. I'm sure someone knows better than me.

Whatever you do, don't get any of the options you mentioned for tilting on your rig. Simply adjust the fore/aft of the camera until you reach the desired tilt.

    Thanks for the input Brian.

I did see the Betz-tools tilt plate but I do not have a Pro or MKV rig. I have a Masters series and was looking for an easier way than installing something between the post and the top stage. Lots of wiring to get around. I do already adjust the fore/aft of the camera, and of course this works but it would be nice to keep it balanced. I guess the only option is the Cat-Griller. What's the problem with the two links I sent, is it the weight of the plates? Would be nice to have something like that but lighter with less bulk.

  14. I'd also flip flop the analogy. I can teach any athletic 18 year old how to run around with a rig, it's the learning to operate that takes a life time.

You are right Mike, forget the farting lawn-mowing unicorn analogy!

HA! And some how he still knew his left foot from his right foot!

  15. Hi Kat,

Maybe you add some 'live-television footage' from that Gayle King Show? .. but nice reel

    Cheers, Erik

I would definitely like to use my Gayle King Show footage, but I wasn't sure if I could include that in that reel. I've noticed other ops do separate reels, one for television, one for music videos, one for features, etc. I've worked other two other tv shows, but never received the footage, even after asking for it. Maybe, I could make just a Gayle King Show highlight reel? Or, maybe, it doesn't matter and I can include it in the current reel. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Kat
