  1. Hey Kat,

I know you said you are short on a few things but the first thing that jumps out of me is that zombie section at the end feels like it goes on for way too long, I would maybe cut into another shot or something else when the elevator segment finishes for sure.

Thanks for the advice, James. I do like that last shot though, maybe I can take out some of the other zombie shots from early on in that segment. Any particular ones that don't do anything for you that you might suggest.

    Thanks,

    Kat

  2. Alec,

I don’t know who makes the MK-V soft case, but…

A few years back, fellow operator Katerina Kallergis posted on the forum that after a bad experience with Modular 51, she found a Florida-based case company on the web. They are called Christian Workshop, and they do soft cases for the military:

Katerina posted some pictures of the case they made for her, and while I wasn’t looking for a soft case at that point, it appeared to be a good design/build and I made a mental note of it. Last year, I was updating some gear, and remembered Katerina’s case. After some searching on the forum, I located her original post and contacted them.

Brooks I am very happy you found that post helpful. I wasn't sure if anyone saw it. I love my case. Much lighter than that anvil I was hauling around.

I had the case built to my specifications, although in retrospect, I should have left the measuring to the experts, as my case ended up being larger than I needed it to be…one flaw of not having a local builder that takes measurements. Once the case arrived (within two weeks I believe), I took it to Innerspace Cases in the San Fernando Valley to have custom foam put in the main body and lid and cut to fit my sled. This part of the process took less than a week.

I believe the original shell from Christian Workshop was $160 (not including shipping). I don’t recall the price of the foam, although I suspect it was over $100. I am quite pleased with the result. I have a cargo van for transporting my gear locally for day-calls, and the case works perfectly for that. It is more protected than when it rode in my old Modular 51 case, and it is easy to haul around with both handles and a removable strap that can go over the shoulder. It also stands up on its own, which is handy, and reduces the likelihood of it getting inadvertently/accidentally knocked over.

Good case and good vender that delivers quickly and that you can actually reach on the phone or by email if need be. Hope this helps.

    Brooks,

I am glad you found my post helpful. I wasn't sure if anyone actually thought it was good or not. I love my case, much better than hauling around that anvil I had.

  3.

I have not owned a car for the past 18years. I've always lived in Manhatten. I get my full rig, stand, and hand truck into cabs and go everywhere.

I guess I didn't factor in actually living IN the city. Even so, as far as cabs go, I applaud you, you have far more patience than me. LOL

  4. My girlfriend is going to be working in NYC for atleast the next 3 or 4 months so I am looking to spend a good chunk of time there during that time. Of course that means I need to find some work there in order to keep the bill collectors at bay. So how do those of you in NY go about dealing with your gear in the city? Do you drive to every gig or do you have your gear compact enough to take it in a taxi or subway? Can I get by without a car and manage to do Steadicam work or should I bring one out(its a bit of a drive) and deal with the wonders of new york parking? How much of your work is in the city verses around it?

Also does anyone have gear they rent out? Might be traveling back and forth a bit and renting someone elses rig might be easier than bringing everything back and forth if that happens.

Any other advice for working in and around New York?

    Thanks,

    Jess

You definitely need a car. As far as parking goes, find a lot nearby and have production pay for it. Don't ever trust the signs in the city (beyond confusing), even if you think its safe to park there, its NOT. I don't rent my stuff out but I'm sure there is someone here that does. Don't have any names for you though.

Hmmm, that's all I've got for you. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

    Good Luck.

  5. Hi Katerina,

Try adding yt:stretch=16:9 to the 'Tags" section of your YouTube video. That should stretch it out to the correct aspect ratio. Adding yt:quality=high may increase the quality, depending on what you uploaded.

    All the best,

    Chris

    Hey Chris,

Thanks for the info. Added that in the "Tag." I think it looks better now. Going to get some more work done and then work on a new reel soon enough. So exciting!

  6. I watched the YouTube version and liked it. Good selection of shots. I'm not sure the Weezer is a match. Don't get me wrong...I like their music, but I was paying more attention to the music than the footage. I'm just sayin....

The vimeo link is password protected. Where in Long Island are you from? I graduated from Garden City HS.

Hi sorry. I tried to get the forum to contact me if anyone replied to my posting but i guess i did it wrong. Thanks for the info. Didn't realize the song was distracting but that's why I needed some different eyes to let me know.

I am from Hicksville. I went to Nassau Community in Garden City for my Associates.

  7. After many emails to Mod 51 and no response I decided to go a different route. Yes their cases are great but why does one have to chase down a company to order a product. Since the anvil sled case I had was too cumbersome, I looked on the web for some companies that make custom soft cases with the the high density foam. Many phone calls later, after being turned down because the companies only made things in bulk, I found a company in Florida that made the sled case for me. Altogether it cost me $220, including shipping.

The dimensions are 25" x 26"x 10". They used a durable, water resistant nylon material for the outside shell, a heavy duty zipper around the 3 sides, 3 quick release snaps for added safety and a shoulder strap and separate handles. They provided me with a special foam glue because I decided to cut the foam myself. They could have cut the foam but it would have cost more money. The 10" thickness was made up of 2" thick layers of foam (hence the glue). I am happy with the way it came out.

If anyone is interested in getting a soft case and would like to check it out, the name of the company is Christian Workshop and the website is http://www.caseworksoft.com.

  8. Well, I took apart the top stage. Turns out there was a loose screw in there...not sure what for. No holes anywhere the screw may have belonged to. And I'm shocked I never heard it rolling around in there. hmmm. Anyway, after spending hours trying to put the stage together, successfully thank god, I still noticed the dovetail lock on the stage not locking properly. I think I may just need a new one. Any ideas where I could get this? Is that even a fix? Or, is there more to it than just replacing that one part?

It's 5:00am...yea, gonna go pass out now.

    Thanks again,

    Kat

  9. Thanks for the replies.

No, I have not moved the gimbal position before checking drop time. I also noticed it goes off balance after I spin balance, as well. I thought I checked everything that could be loose. I'll give it another check though. I'll even check it without the cables attached to be sure there are no outside influences. If it doesn't do it, then I'll know it's the cables. Is it at all possible for the fore and aft, side to side adjustments to not lock into place?

  10. Hey everyone,

Having an issue on my Masters here. I've been static balancing my sled and finding that when I check the drop time the sled will then have lost it's balance. It'll then lean slightly forward, sometimes it'll lose its side to side balance, too. I'm not sure exactly but I think it may have to do with the topstage's dovetail lock. At one point, while holding the sled horizontally, I noticed the camera and dovetail sliding slowly towards the floor. I then tightened all the screws on the lock and didn't notice the sliding motion again, but it still lost static balance after each drop time check. Then I thought maybe it was the dovetail, I changed the dovetail I was using and the problem persists. Am I doing something wrong? Is it mechanical? What?

Your input would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,

    Kat

  11. In June channels 52-69 are being reallocated to other things in the US which will leave 7-51 allocated for television use. Once television stations switch to only broadcasting in digital there should be less interference although it will be harder to tell which channels are occupied without looking at a channel listing or using a DTV tuner.

Channels 14-20 are sometimes allocated for land mobile radio use in the US. Mainly in large cities.

So the RF links transmitter I just bought that transmits via channels 65 thru 69 is garbage now? If so, that really stinks.

  12. Mazda 5 alternative

    Mazda info

    Edmunds on Mazda 5

the mazda 5 is a good alternative, sliding doors!, lots of cargo room, good value (18K plus)

So I went to Mazda and checked out both the Mazda3hatchback and the Mazda5. Looks to me like a sharp looking, fast, little hatchback but a bit small in the cargo area. The Mazda5 is pretty interesting. Ssshhh, don't call it a minivan. Although, that's what it is but a smaller, sportier version. The sliding doors could come in very handy, the cargo space seems to be limitless and the MPG is above average. I am also gonna take a look at the Dodge Caliber and the Chevy HHR. According to some info on the web, they both have good cargo room (the HHR more so). All three have comparable fuel effiency.

    The search continues...

  13. I have someone building me a rickshaw and he had a question for me. I'm not sure if this matters but what size bicycle wheels does one use? He asked if they could be 20" or if they have to be 26".

    Thanks,

    Kat

  14. Thanks for the input! I forgot about the Mazda 3, it's a nice looking car. I was looking at some Hybrid SUVs, the Ford Escape and the Mercury Mariner to be specific. As much as I'd like to "go green" the price tag keeps knocking me in the head. But what do you guys have to say about the whole hitch situation for the vehicle mounts?
