  1. Thank you very much fellas! I gotta see what I can do with that clip. I might just have to pull it and use something else.

     

    I thought about the bio but since I'm fairly new to the game, I don't have a whole bunch of experiences to share. Up until a few years ago, I was just a camera assistant/ remote head tech. I can talk for days about that. On the other hand, your right, I think I do need to add something else to separate myself.

     

    I'll keep trying different types of platforms to see what I get and fix whatever problems there my be.

  3. Thanks a lot fellas. That helps out. I usually run the red off of its own battery power. I don't want to have any issues arise where the camera goes down and I have to troubleshoot by eliminating each and every aks to find out what the problem is. The only cable I'll have plugged into the camera is the S/S and BNC video out.

  4. Hello all. I will be shooting a project with the RED cam shortly and the DP asked what FF I have. When I told him it was the Bartech, he said that we might need to "upgrade" because in his past experiences, the Bartech has overloaded the RED cam. He hasn't elaborated on what he meant by "overload" yet and am hoping he will e-mail back soon about this. I have never encountered or heard of this issue before now. The only way I can think of this happening is if the RED is powering the Bartech(I'll be powering through the sled)...and even then, it could have been a issue with the cable or the camera. There are just too many variables that could have made the camera "overload". The camera is so finicky as it is, I just can't believe that it was the FF. Just wanted to know if anyone has come across this.

  5. Hey Bryan. Overall, I think its a great reel. My favorite is the push on both the soccer girls...great stops! Your choice of music flows well with your content. In fact, your 1st minute of footage looks ascetically and technically great. It shows that your very comfortable with the rig.

     

    I would actually think about opening up with the soccer shots. You want to catch your potential client's eye right off the bat. I feel that's your most exciting shot. Your opening shot is great, but to be honest, a little boring. Once you catch 'em with a great visual, then you can go into the "walk and talk" slow-mo stuff. The other thing that caught my eye was at about :24sec the focus went out a couple of times. Just something I noticed right off the bat and I think other people will to.

     

    I understand that you do mostly corporate stuff, but I think you could loose the last minute of your reel. Not that its bad....its not, just repetitive. I think keeping your reel at around 2:30 or would suffice.

  6. If you have found one could you tell me what Matte Box they use in conjunction with it.

     

    I bought one of these Ringlights years ago and you have to get a seperate Matte Box. Lite Panel really pissed me about telling me which one to buy and I ended up buying one after another wasting about $1500 on Matte box's (plural). Even now my ringlight just sits on a shelf completely ill prepared to go out on a proper job. I am sure Litepanel have sorted it all out by now I just feel so burnt having spunked all that cash on something that is still useless; I have not gone there again. I just have production book the Gekko. It works, the Mattebox fitments are there, they work.Just cable up the control unit to the bottom of your sled with a cable over the front.

     

    Let me know what MatteBox is on the back please.

    Hey Thomas. I was on a job recently and came across Lite Ribbon. http://www.litegear.com/sales-lr.html They put out a ton of light. It was great to work with because its light weight, and quick to put on. (adhesive back). This wasn't a Steadicam situation that we were using the lights with so we had a mini 12v battery pack hooked up to it. I'm sure you'll be able to make a cable to power off your rig. Check them out.   7. I had an opportunity to use this about a month ago and had nothing but praise about it. I loved the size of it....could place it anywhere out of the way. There wasn't any noticeable delay. The only complaint I can think of is the power connector on the unit. I've just had problems in the past with those types of connectors regardless of the screw-lock. (after multiple uses, the contacts inside the female plug get pushed out so that it makes intermittent connection with male plug). I'm definitely going to buy one for my kit......can't go wrong with that price!

    -As far as digital transmition, it doesn't matter if its analog or digital, your still transmitting a signal, so it carries the same legalities as everything else.

    Just to clarify that question...I understand that when the US analog-to-digital TV broadcast transition is completed this summer, the spectrum formerly occupied by the analog TV channels will be carved up for the use of other services (such as emergency communications, perhaps??) Anyway, if I had a UHF setup, for instance...are there specific channels or frequencies that will become completely unusable due to whatever communication services end up occupying that spectrum?

     

     

    I'm sure there will be specific allocated channels but just like before on UHF , you take your chances with broadcasting on those channels. Just to cover yourself you should do a little research and find out which channels are going to be allocated to such usage and try to stay away from them.

I'm looking into a cheap wireless video transmitter & receiver combo to use for handheld and Flyer with an HVX200, I've scoured the threads and gotten some good info, but I just can't seem to put all the pieces together. Can someone enlighten me on the pros and cons of different options, and in particular the practical issues with different frequency ranges and technologies?

     

    Specifically,

     

    -What are the pros and cons of 900mhz vs 1.2ghz vs 2.4 ghz? Seems most folks are using 2.4ghz or 900mhz, few are using 1.2. It seems that range is a function of both frequency band, and transmitter/receiver design.

    -Can you define "microwave" vs. UHF range in terms of 900/1.2/2.4? Are there other UHF frequencies?

    -Is there a cheap unit available in a frequency range that would allow me to simultaneously have a cheap directors' monitor/tuner and a dedicated receiver for video village?

    -for any of the frequency ranges, are any of the cheap, consumer-grade receivers worth buying? I've seen some UHF antennas.

    -anything else I need to consider? Any real-world considerations or specific recommendations of systems that you like (or hate)?

    -what frequencies or ranges may be the least prone to interfere with, or be affected by, other items such as wireless focus, walkies, or other radio communications?

    -what does the digital transition mean to the legality and practicality of using these frequency ranges?

    -Don't buy cheap stuff! There is a reason Steadicam ops use what they use. Yes, they cost a bit more than say Radio Shack, but they work. You can read in previous post what we use and like. I have a Canatrans transmitter with a Hermes receiver. It works perfectly fine.

    -I'm a huge proponent of microwave. If I had the $$ I'd have one but you don't really have to go into the microwave realm of transmition. UHF works fine for what we as ops do. For the most part, they're cheaper. We don't walk a 1/4 mile away from video village when operating a shot. If you do, more power to you. At that point, you'll need a chase vehicle.

    -No matter where you go, you'll ALWAYS run into some kind of radio interference. Preston runs on 2.4 and bartech runs on 900. The audio and VTR guys could be running on the same. The only way to achieve a better signal is to have different kinds of antennas that have different gains.....or up the wattage on your transmitter......but there are some legal stipulations to that. I believe that a radio can have no more than 1/4 watt of output power to not require you to have a license to operate. There are some companies out there that run on a higher wattage. Yeah, you get a great signal, but will you be able to have kids?? UHF......who knows where that's going.
