  1. Jorge......I am jealous of your monitors....and as a Brasilian.....your pictures with Giselle. You lucky SOB! :P

I'm seriously considering upgrading my monitor with the cinetronic. I think I might wait for the new housing.

or is the new housing a free retrofit? How far away is the new housing....

Still recovering from my cmotion purchase....

  2. wow....

I can't imagine 2 alexas on a freestyle rig....that rig slexes like crazy. The new evo model is better but still.....as a stereographer I would never do that.

    ingenious solution.....kudos!

the ALexa M is coming soon.....so yes I doubt you will ever have to deal with 2 full sized alexas again!

  3. wow that is alot of extra "boxes" !!!

My current rig I'm flying....Atom/Epic .....the accesories

    -8m camin (3D lens control)

    -Aja for genlock/sync

    -Denecke for TC lock

    -DECIMATOR for my monitor

    thats it.

sounds like you have an additional 5-8lbs of boxes and cables on there....this makes the TS-5 alot less desirable I think...

  4. I was called for that job as I'm part of the regular Direct TV 3D crew (as rig tech/convergence puller.) I'm in NM on a 3D feature so I couldn't go.

I'm frankly surprised at your loom??? ....In all my jobs with them we just run 1 fiber cable to the sony mpe200....never seen a loom that big....

    I wonder what happened.

I'm happy you got a proper rate.

I REALLY want everyone reading this to hold onto thier rates for 3D gigs......trust us you will earn every penny of that higher rate....

that said....here is my rig on the current feature...notice my segway in the backround....

  5. Yes the epic is retarded and it is beyond me why they decided to reinvent a simple start/stop cable.

Afaik, neither preston or cmotion have come up with a way to trigger the epic.

On my recent 3D movie shooting on epics the guys over at ET made a small box with a 9v battery inside with a toggle switch on the outside and bnc's on the sides to connect to the red pigtail breakout cable......

That said it still didn't work consistantly. Sometimes one camerra would roll and not the other or one camera would cut and not the other etc..... Ad then of course sometimes the battery would run out and we have to scramble for a 9v....

Now on my current 3D show we have the "new" GiG-E cable witch is a lemo. We run that in-between both cameras and now it link the controls together including start/stop.

I wonder if your could use the gige cable to send a start trigger to the camera instead on using the bnc on the pigtail cable.

Why? Well that pigtail cable is sooooo fragile. I have gone thru countless of that vital but very fragile cables. My current feature we have like 5 of them as spares.....

Last i spoke to cmotion they were busy working on a start/stop soluton for the epic......im sure preston is too. 2 months ago they said they were havi a difficult time getting information nesecary from Red to complete the solution. I hope they got what they needed and are working on it now as not having start stop is a big PITA.......

I would love to hear any updates anyone has

I will post pictures of the start stop box i have with me. Also pictures of the inside as soon as i get home from set......might help someone out.

  6. "Pedro: do you find that the handles on the Yaeger get in the way?"

-Not at all....I spin my bracket...Bam, Balance. I think my ergo XCS handle is longer than some out there and the rig is well away from the cart for balance.

"your welds are better than Maken's. Vote for Pedro "

    -Thanks!!!

    more to come!

First week on a feature and the cart is a big hit.

  7. Yes, i have used gyros once......worked great.

The weight is not a big issue since I'm adding so much weight that is essentially ballast anyways. So it just useful weight really.

In fact I'm looking to buy a set of gyros, probably going to use more often, especially on my segway.....or "india mount" situations that happen quite often in 3D steadicam land....

  8. I spent alot of money on my CMotion Cvolution (8motor Camin for 3D)

I've made my money back and use it on my 2D jobs.....so far I've had ZERO problems.

I absolutely LOVE all the features, the LCD screen built in.....and for 3D it is FAR ahead of all the competition.

Cmotion is working with Element technica and it is sending metadata to their metadata controller....

When you pair the cvolution with the cfinder or the cdisplay it becomes even more powerful.

I cannot say enough....about how much I love it.

All the AC's that have used my system love the large focus knob too...

I would NOT compare it to the ARRI......for me it's easy decision.

    Cmotion.

In fact I'm getting ready to purchase a second system.

  9. So here is a closeup of the final configuration.

You can see you have the rig pushed up all the way against the stage and the stack height is minimal. In addition you are as far back with the rig as you were before but now you lost around 2" of height.

    IMG_3683-700x522.jpg

So does this equate to a massive improvement? NO.

But with steadicam....small improvements add up quick. As an operator I welcome the improvement.

More testing and set pictures to come.....

quick video of the finished setup.

    or vimeo

  10. on top of each other

    IMG_3679-597x800.jpg

I now wanted to test the improvement on my steadicam.

First I wanted to show how we used to have to mount the rig on the sled. We had to add height to enable us to move the rig back. So we used to mount a dovetail to the steadicam dovetail, then mount a hybrid to the rig and slid the rig onto the dovetail. The hybrid also provided a place to mount the rods for either the balance compensator or a counterweight battery.

As you can see in the picture below, the total "stack height" necessary made it so that the distance from your gimbal to the CG of the rig increased. This makes the steadicam more "top heavy" thus making you have to extend your post and making for a long rig. This of course can present many problems to the operator. The batteries being so much closer to the ground can inhibit you moving over objects, going over stairs and makes operating on a segway much harder as the batteries are now banging into your tire.

You can see the stack height illustrated by the yellow line.......also note the position of the rig over the post illustrated by the red line.

    IMG_3680-597x800.jpg

Now with the NEW sharkfin, you can drastically reduce your stack height while maintain the same forward position over the post. Notice the dovetail is gone and the hybrid (I now run the rods of my steadicam dovetail.)

Notice we lost close to 2" in height and distance from the gimbal! This means a shorter post.

  11. Element Technica has just released a new optional part for the Atom rig.

    href="http://www.technica3d.com

Also posted on my blog.... steadi3d.com

    IMG_3676-597x800.jpg

It allows you on a crane or jib to slide the rig further back and this reduces the amount of counterweight needed since it moves the CG closer to the mounting point.

Here is a side by side comparison of the "standard" sharkfin and the new"steadi/jib" sharkfin.

    IMG_3676-597x800.jpg

As you might see below what they did was remove a significant amount of material to allow this movement. Now admittedly there might be a slight reduction in stiffness but this is only intended for use on a steadicam or jib/crane. So this is less of a concern. The benefits here outweigh the cons.

You see them here bolted on the Atom rig. On one side I mounted the standard and on the other the new one. You can clearly see the difference in this picture.
