It seemed like the camera opp was being told to make the shots more edgy and shaky, i'm sure they could have been pulled smoother if intended. The reason for this i'm not too sure as it starts this way right from the start of the film, perhaps to add to the raw feel of the film but by the time it's most needed it seems over played. I still need to see the film a few more times thought and it's such a pleasure to watch.

During the strange lunch sequence in the Museum I have found the handheld style really disturbing. I don't see how some good Steadicam here and there would have "ruined" anything in that movie, or in any other. K. Agreed, but In the long shot I think handheld was perfect but other places it just looked like the cam op was mimiking what he'd do with steadicam. Still it would have been fun to try that long shot with a light rig :rolleyes:

Amazing film ! I did get sick of the hand held shots though, although beautifully shot to me it cryed out for steadicam in some parts. Anybody else think the hand held was over done ? -matt

Yes get a flyer if you don't mind selling it on fairly soon after you have learned the ropes. Also think about getting a glidecam v25 or second hand efp/IIIa for a little more $ than the flyer but will last you longer (you can fly a wider range of cameras and acsesories). -Matt "I started with a flyer" Burton.

I've found an advert for the kino-flo kamio for what seems like next to nothing at b&h but am I missing something ? I've been quoted over £1900 in the uk for the 6E kit ! link to advet (sorry if wrong section ?)

Nothing wrong with teaching both ways ;) I'm terrible operating regular but when I go back to goofy after some time struggling it feels like I have advanced greatly. Strangly I have found in Don Juan I operate better with the rig switched to regular, something about looking over my left side i find better. Eric, Perhaps as we in the UK drive with our left hand changing gear and our right hand on the wheel, that this is reversed in the US and your more used to doing things backwards :P -matt

No actually the instructor is correct Rubbish !!!!!! Thats like saying to a right handed person "write with your left hand, it just takes practice". Aslo how much effort does it take to boom on a modern arm ? Hardly any thats how much ! When you learned to ride a bike did you learn to ride backwards first ? Anybody surf/skate/board or even write and learned switch first ? I think not. Why teach something thats plainly wrong ? Madness........................

Your instructor was WRONG ! The only way to be sure if your regular or goofy is to try both ways and see whitch one works best for you. It's just like being right or left handed and should have the same effect. I'm right handed and use my right hand to operate the gimbol (where the most delecate and precise input is needed). The problem is your not just using your hand, your also using your feet, if you skatebaord/snowboard/surf goofy then your right foot leads naturally. This however isnt the same for a steadicam stance as your travelling forwards rarther than sideways. As I operate with my right hand on the gimbol, this leads the sled to be on my right side and thus in a ready possition my left leg leads with my hips and shoulders facing towards the sled. When I begin my walk forwards my right legs comes forwards but I keep my foot pointing to the right (with the left foot pointing straight on). Walk like a ninja ! :ph34r:

I was making fun (only a little) of the instructor as it seemed like he was telling the opp to fight a poorly setup rig ! Looking back perhaps I was wrong but I was certainly not making fun of the operator or the camera opp. Have took the link down anyhows as I wouldn't want people scrutinizing my early operating without my consent. Woweeee £21.600 for something that looks like my grandad knocked up in his shed after one to many wiskys. OMG and whats with the grip handle mounted on the arm ? Madness :o it's like they have never even seen a modern day steadicam, and if they have then for sure they never used one. Criminal just criminal this sort of thing shouldn't be aloud, have you seen who they list on the links section ? I'm sure the likes of NBC and Eurosport wouldn't like that sort of association.
