  1. Hey All, Was just looking around the NAB website and noticed that during the DOP Workshop they are running there on day two they are running a Steadicam Techniques for HD Production seminar and I was wondering if anyone knew who would be giving the talk? Garrett, Jerry? Could be an interesting one to see. Leigh, just sent you an email. Looking forward to meeting everyone as well. JP Melbourne Australia
  2. Thanks Todd. Am only really looking at LA to Vegas for NAB at this stage which is obviousley nice and short. So Im sure it will be fine. JP
  3. Hey Guys I am in the process of booking my trip to the USA for NAB and Cinegear and was wondering wether anyone could recomend any particular airlines to avoid? My travel agent wants to book me on American Airlines flights, yet on SouthWest's website I can find flights for less then a third of the AA prices. Im not carrying gear its just me and my suitcase, and has anyone had problems with SouthWest on a level like this? Or are there anyother airlines that I should be looking at? And is this too good to be true? Thanks in advance. James Puli Melbourne Australia
  4. Hey Eric, Jim and all. At this stage Im hoping to come over to the US and A for NAB and hopefully for Cinegear as well. All depending on work here in Aus of course. Not knowing alot at all about Vegas, where is a reasonabley priced place to stay close to the action and tradeshow venue? Looking forward to meeting everyone! JP Melbourne Australia
  5. I was flying that package alot at IBC. Thought it was a great setup. Howard had modified the Flyer arm 1 in its post diameter and 2 he had put a reel socket block on it, so we could use it with any standard vest and or hardmount. Was an interesting experience flying this setup with a Klassen vest. Made it an even more expensive package. Check it out here. http://www.geocities.com/flyingfilmssteadicam/jp.htm JP
  6. When I've been working with Steadyrig arms, the only times I've herd squeeking is when the screws on the spring covers were not done up properly, or there was some dust in and around there. The first thing I'd try would be to check all the screws and if necessary take the covers off, give them a clean. If that doesnt fix it then i'd give Hugo a call. JP
  7. Hey Andrew, I can only second your thoughts on Phil and Rustys' Steadicam knowolodge. I had the pleasure of working with both of them at another workshop here in Melbourne last year and it was a fantastic experience, not only for me being their assistant, but for all the students as well which is the main thing. I only wish I had been there with you for this one. JP

"Gosh... I want one... better do some work instead of being on holiday all the time!" I can only second that statement Tom. I know im still fully in holiday mode. JP
  9. Its all about right place right time Will. Just found a 2nd hand Merc Vito van in perfect condition. And it was even owned by another cameraman who has maintained it VERY well and has done most of the mods already (removable seats, barriers etc). Great gallery on that website. It has given me some more ideas on what I can do with the van. J "Sometimes we get lucky" P
  10. G'day all. I can currently get all my gear in the back of a Ford Falcon station wagen with my magliner also. Now this isnt very safe, without my cargo barrier in, which i have to take out to fit the magliner in. I am currently looking at the Volkswagen Transporters or Mercedes Vito or Sprinter vans. The ones I have been looking at have 5 seats (rear 3 are removable) and there is a moveable cargo barrier which i can place either behind the pasanger seats or behind the front seats. Its a bit of work to swap around, but I have found I can get all my gear behind the pasanger seats, and theres enough leg room between the passanger and drivers seats for my magliner to be on its side and my rigshaw which i strap to the cargo barrier. Still looking at how i can put all my gear (in boxes if possible) on the magliner and roll it up ramps safley into the back. Thats my next home project. Hopefully while leaving the back seats in. But most guys here in Aust use station wagens, custom setup vans or shelved out 4x4's. JP
  11. Don't know if you've seen MK-V's coment in the workshops section of the forum, but they have a workshop running in a couple of weekends time from the 16th October for 4 days in Manchester, U.K. After meeting and hanging around with the MK-V guys at IBC, I know this would be a great workshop to do. If you cant make these, we have one running in Melbourne Australia in Janurary. JP Melbourne Australia
  12. Hey Sven, sounds good to me. Wanna say meet at the Tiffen booth at like 12:30pm? Looking forward to it. JP

If anyone comes up with a dinner, drinks or what ever please let me know as ill definantly be up for it. JP Hey guys. Im there from the 8th till the 11th, so hopefully i will get to meet a few ops from the other side of the world to me. If anyone is doing names etc for a dinner, drinks or any sort of get together, count me in. JP
  14. Hey John From what I have herd, they have had mainly rental wear and tear issues. Last time I went to test it at the Melbourne office, the locking screw on the dovetail, had been lost and they had noticed it and were rectifying it. Appologies to anyone who took offense to my pre editted post. JP Melbourne Australia
  15. Hey Dylan I am based in Melbourne also. If you havent sent the rig back to Lemac yet give me a call next week and I would love to come and check it out and see if we cant solve the problem. I have used the Flyers a few times (I normally fly a Pro), always found it to be a great rig. I know Lemac had a few problems with theirs since they got it last year, but nothing this major from what I have herd. I dont know of any other Flyers in Melbourne except Lemacs so congrats on being the first in Melbourne to own one. So yeah as I said give us a call. James "JP" Puli Melbourne Australia 0413 231 337
  16. Hey Guys, Im suprised that no one has mentioned UK band Coldplay and their song Yellow. From memory it was Paul Edwards who did that one. Its a great 1 shot clip walking along a beach. I just have to find a link for you guys now. JP
  17. Hey Guys, Dont know if this helps or not but I was checking out Panavision Australias website the other day and found this photo of Simon Hardings Ultra and Genesis setup on Superman which was shot in Sydney. As well as some other interesting things on the Genesis. http://www.panavision.com.au/News/SupermanGallery03.htm Theres a few other good pics of the cameras setup in the gallery on sticks etc as well. And theres an article here as well talking to the Director and Tom Sigel the DP which is interesting as well. http://www.panavision.com.au/News/Genesis_on_Superman.htm And again theres another article where Prodigy Films used the Genesis cameras for a Multicam shoot of the Black Eyed Peas last concert here. A bit of a different use for them. It doesnt tell you much about the setups but is something a bit different. http://www.panavision.com.au/News/Genesis_on_BEP.htm JP Melbourne Australia
  18. The most obvious answer to me would be to fly the SR3 with its on board 24 volt battery. I find that often depending on the setup with the SR3 I like having the extra weight of the battery on there. The thing you will have to check up on is power for the video split. I know some of the rental companies have cables to power the split from the camera, but depending on the rental company, and the power outlets this can be an issue with remote focus, as the remote run can be the same plug as the accessory power. (I know this is the case on the SR2's but cant remember the SR3's). Most common splits we get here tend to be 12 volts. Speek to the rental company and the 1st AC and find out about the camera setup and you will be able to make it work for you. Its better spending the extra time in pre to save yourself hassles on set. JP
  19. Yeah he was my first point of call, but didnt have any. But is still keeping an eye out for me. Thats why I thought here would be my next point of call. Thanks any way Marc. JP

  21. Glen Steer is probably Australias most experienced TV Steadicam Operator. He has done the same shots at the swimming at all the major Olympics, Comm Games, World Championships etc for as long as I can think of. He had the Zoe zoom controller mounted on his gimble, and zoomed when and where the shot warranted it. The main zoom he is doing was during medal ceremonies where he starts in front of the athletes and tracks around to an over shoulder shot with the nations flags going up and he simply continued his movement with the zoom. And it looked amazing. He obviousley did have a spotter with him most of the time, but having done the same shots over and over again, he knows the pool backwards. The only little thing we noticed was that the areas at each end of the pool (where the blocks are) were about half the size they were in Athens and Manchester. This made all our jobs alot harder. The other little thing was that he had a 4mm lens on the camera. JP
  22. Thanks for that Erwin. Thats a fantastic interview and definantly one I want a copy of. So heres my probelm. Does anyone out there know how to download it? Any help would be appreciated. JP
  23. I cant see Hugo in there. The operator at the pool is Glen Steer and the others are Dale Henderson (who also operates the Water Steadicam). JP
  24. Sorry about this guys, but I had a problem with my digi camera and a long story short ended up losing a whole memory card full of photos which just happened to be from the comm games. Sorry about this, not sure if Andy or Hugo took any but will try and find some to show you the setup. I have only now recovered from the games. We did over 200 hours in 16 days straight. The longest day we did was like 20 hours and the shortest was about 8. Was a huge job, I saw daylight at my house once, but was great fun at the same time. JP
  25. Leigh [but the issue for me is that it will be conflict of interest. If I attend Tiffen Steadicam or Glidecam Workshop to learn their skill and later come back to get their market share. It will be unfair to Tiffen or Glidecam] Is what you are saying here that if you work for (or make) Ford cars, you cant learn to drive in a GMC or BMW or Mercedes ? Are you going to start off your own workshops so that any clients of yours (if there are any) dont have the conflict of interest as well ? Just a thing as well, have a look at the guys who you are talking to here. They are all operators on big movies, tv shows etc who all know what they are talking about. From your posts, you obviousley dont. Is it just me guys or has this got a bit off topic from the origional SK2 Vs Flyer? Maybe we should put a poll up or something and see what the population of this forum thinks should happen next. Just to keep it fair to all parties. JP
