  1. thanks guys, would others agree to chop out the dialogue and place a soundtrack over the entire reel? i've seen some reels with dialogue others without. i know dop's sometimes watch a reel muted, as all they care about are the shots. is it just up to preference? cheers
  2. thanks charles, aware of the youtube issua, but i think google video is even worse, and i have no idea how to upload to my site. so for now, it's really all i can think of in terms of getting feedback before the reel is locked and up loaded. i was thinking of a having a slower paced montage like this in my dvd reel and then a chapter of music vids and faster paced shots from different works (vehicle mount, running etc) is this getting a bit too complicated? should i just trim some stuff out of this 4min+ piece and add some action within? would adding some handheld work be 'jarring' ? cheers
  3. have gone way too long without a reel. just playing around with some clips i have from finished products. please have a look and let me know what you think. my last reel (3 years ago) had shorter clips and was cut to music, this time i'm playing with fewer, lengthier clips and leaving the finished sound over top. i'm aware there's a stretch issue in the reel. i have to address that with adobe :) cheers. m
  4. the first two shots appear to be on a dolly correct? the opening shot, the woman appears soft. not sure if this is a compression thing with myspace or if the shot is just soft. if soft, you may want to cut some of the head off the shot. it's hard to tell what is going on in the really dark shot near the end of your reel where you are leading the actor. maybe there is more detail when viewed with a high res dvd on tv, but with this myspace page, it was quite dark. music seemed a bit tranquil for my taste. hope you're doing well there in mtl. was there this past weekend and drove back home on the monday during the snow storm. a normal 4.5 hour trip took 8 hours. enjoyed the poutine though :)
  5. i see on the mk-v site they have a wireless focus system. was not aware of this. anyone out there in the field with some feedback on this kit? matt -a happy bartech owner
  6. just wondering if anyone has tried operating off of a marshall monitor. bright enough for day ext?
  7. i didnt notice any pricing on the site. wonder how it compares to the uk and american made rigs that are accepted as an industry standard. cant say i blame them. the chinese film market is a big one. and those looking to get a rig are probably (as janice pointed out) faced with HUGE taxes in getting an american made rig. this is a way for an operator over there to get into the biz. companies like adobe offer 'poorer' countries discounts on software. this is hardly something that tiffen could do. so what other options are there? knock offs are seen in every country, including the usa.
  8. what kind of waters will you be in? i've shot from boats before in mild to slightly wavy water and have had great results. being on sticks, will get you a stable shot, but any sway in the boat will show up in the frame.
  9. eric, do you laugh at the dp that knows all the gear and cant utilize it within the parameters of the directors vision? i've worked with dop's that knew next to nothing about the millenium xl, but they could light very well and tell a story. they knew what a steadicam could/couldnt do. what a crane could/couldnt do. they knew about ramping, and shutter angles, pushing/pulling film etc etc. but yeah, couldnt find the 'panaglow' .... you gonna have a laugh? how did i come 'up the ranks'? well i wouldnt say i came up any ranks or that i'm at any rank. i'm more interested in directing and documentary. but where i'm at now, camera operating and steadicam pay some bills. i'm non union. been steadicam'ing for 5 years.(trained under bob crone in vancouver then did the garret brown course in philly) i'm not at the level that you or michael are at, but i think i do what i do well. i've operated 2 35mm features...were they 80 million dollar hollywood shoots? no. before that i volunteered as whatever i could in the camera dept's and did some real limited focus pulling on indie sets. i also have a background in photography. as a result of my method, i'm retarded when it comes to technicaly knowing some of the cameras inside and out(thankfuly i work with great 1sts that do), but i'm doing what i want to do and am happy. i just fail to see why many members of camera dept's need to have an attitude.
  10. AC's and experienced operators always know when a DP wasn't either an AC nor an operator. Watching them fumble around with the cameras (even lowering the eyepiece or trying to turn on the "glow") is always good for a laugh. i find it pompous that you would laugh at a dp for 'fumbling' to turn on the glow, rather than just be chill about it and help out. a lot of dp's dont operate and are certainly not up to date on the cameras out there right now. the dp's job is to light...not to understand a certain camera model inside and out. your idea that an operator should be an assistant first is fine when it comes down to the technical...but a good operator needs to understand composition, movement, timing... and there's some people that just dont get it. same with steadicam. a good assistant does not make for a good steadicam operator. i've seen lots of bad steadicam on tv...from older guys that went through the assistant route....but yeah, they knew how to turn on the glow and lower the eyepiece.
  11. coverd about 4kms today in forest in about 1.5 hours. production was in need of a few long walking down a path shots for one of those dvd's that you see looped in the tv section of stores (like the fireplace log, or fish tank :P) i am WIPED! never thought the fatigue would hit as it did. i've done long stints without break before in the rig, mostly tv type stuff, but it was the rocky, inclining/declining path that did me in. time for a visit to the massage parlour :) lets hear your endurance stories...good and bad oh and setup was master series and sony hd
  12. differences between 16mm and 35mm or differences between sr3 and 435? 1st. 35mm requires more attention to focus than 16mm, so make sure your 1st knows is experienced. you'll also get shorter mag times in 35mm than in 16mm. sr3 and 435 are both 24 volt systems. you probably used on board batteries with the sr3, but with the 435 you'll need 24 volts pumping through your sled or a battery belt. both cam's use the fischer 2 pin as power. run start /stop cable on the sr3 is 3 pin, on the 435 it's the 11pin fischer. 435 is heavier than sr3 and a lot louder.
  13. that's not real is it? who would go to that much effort to go for a jog?
  14. how about the steadicam merlin. according to the tiffen site: 'The Steadicam Merlin is half the weight and four times as stable as the JR. Yet, it can move as smoothly as the big $60,000 rigs used in Hollywood.'
  15. Even so, IMHO sitting around watching videos these days is such a waste. At least there is some interesting things to watch on TV, music videos are not one of them. interesting topic for discussion i think. in your opinion, what is 'interesting' to watch on tv? stanley cup hockey? family guy? i find music vid's to be an interesting avenue of experimenting and trying new things. sure there's lots of 'yo yo's' and same old same old, but what about tv series land? lots of crap out there. reality tv? :) come on! gimme a break. i'll probably watch more tv in the next month than i will all year...world cup! :)
  16. there's a channel called MTV that's been around for a while.
  17. i think many people watch music videos. there's channels dedicated to the showing of them.
  18. maybe a toronto op pub crawl :) bryan can you be designated driver?
  19. minority where? on a global scale, caucasians are the minority.
  20. i op about 3 sec drop time. i found in neutral that the mass on top or bottom would catch more of the wind and act against.
  21. interesting. how many other op's out there use a neutral? wouldnt this make holding a horizon outside difficult? one blow of wind and the thing is spinning or you're compensating with your fingers....
  22. eric, you using an AR and thus your neutral drop time?
  23. yeah, i know it's not a steadicam, but it is steadicam related. so just a shot in the dark, anyone on the forum getting rid of one of these cam's or know someone who is? cheers matt
