  1. Here's an article from last year that has a video embedded in it that shows some shots off the "Impossible Shots" demo that he created to show off what the Steadicam prototype could do. Not sure if this has been posted before but I didn't find it on my initial search of the forum, so, for anyone interested in a little history, here it is! http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/steadicam-inventor-reveals-impossible-shots-725346

  5. Hey guys and girls, I have an ULB music video shoot Friday night (September 25) and just found out that we're sub-renting a camera package from another production which includes the Alexa XT, Hawk Anamorphics (potentially V-Lite), a remote focus and Teradek Bolt. Though in the past two years I've been able to push my Flyer LE to it's maximum and then some without any problems, this setup is several to ten pounds over the weight capacity of my system. Does anybody have a rig more commensurate to this camera package that you could rent out for the night? Any advice is also appreciated. Best, Greg Arch
  6. Hello Everyone and Greetings from Hamburg, Germany! I joined this forum because for the last several months I've been very interested in purchasing a Steadicam. I've never used one and I'm lost with where to start. They are very expensive pieces of equipment, so I'm trying to gather as much information as possible first. A few notes about me and my upcoming project (in other words, my requirements): I am just shy of 5'-0". I am female and I am absolutely not flat-chested. It's important to mention I wear an F cup when considering vests. I've been working out at the gym three times per week for over two months (since June 2015) and though I am petite in stature, I have become quite strong within a very short time span. In the second week of October, I will be flying to Japan to film for one week and will be filming all day. It's an ethnographic documentary and thus there is no script and no detailed plan. I will be following around the main characters for one week and filming as much as I can while waiting for a story to unfold in front of the camera. So, where should I start? Throw whatever ideas and suggestions you have at me. I appreciate them.
  7. dear friends, I've a Pilot to sell, it's in good conditions, I used it on 4 theater stages... It comes with the original bag and with a very robust flycase tailored on the steadicam and accessories... The basic concept of case is that it is really sturdy, solid and handy, it is designed to leave your camera attached on the quick release plate, it has 2 wheels on a side and handles on 3 sides so you can also move the case as trolley. I can Mount for you a Manfrotto or Cartoni quick release plate. Now a Cartoni is mounted. The steady is located in Verona (North Italy - Europe) I can send it everywhere... and if you come here good Italian food and wine (Amarone) are provided of course... price is 2.500 Euro shipping excluded... :-) Here are the photos
  8. So I got a crazy good deal on Flyer rig used... Huzzah! The only problem is the entire thing smells overwhelmingly of cigarette smoke! I'm trying every old wives trick in the book so if anyone finds this remotely interesting (or entertaining!) I can post about my methods if it works out. However, per my inital question, IF all of my efforts and spells and incantations fail- could I purchase a new Scout Vest, (probably a compact vest because I am a smaller framed girl anyway) and would the new vest be compatible with the rest of flyer rig? Thanks in advance! PS- if anyone out there is/was a smoker and has had this problem, it would be lovely to add some new ingedients to my list of possible concoctions!

  17. Hi everybody In light of a lot of sports/steadicam related discussions I figured, why not share my experience. As some of you may know, besides being a steadicam operator, I’ve been an avid competitive gymnast for over 23 years. I just wanted to take the time to write up a small article about gymnastics and the steadicam life and how I feel the two have influenced each other over the past years. Comparing the two has made sense to me since the day I picked up a rig. Like many athletes, gymnasts spend years practicing and developing skills before entering official compeition. The same goes for steadicam, in the beginning, one spends a lot of time developing the strength and insight into what makes a great operator on smaller projects before being able to work on a feature film or a tv-series. Both disciplines (cause let’s face it, steadicam doesn’t involve sitting around doing nothing) require a great deal of strength and stamina. For me personally the two have had tremendous benefits towards one another. Due to my sports background I was able to quickly adapt the musclememory needed to operate this wonderful machine, in return, the more jobs I keep getting, the stronger my legs and back get, making it possible for me to achieve new heights in gymnastics (literally). Though a lot of attention has to be directed towards correct posture, stretching, preventing exertion, both operating steadicam and gymnastics require a bit more than just the physical aspects. I’m talking about the gear, Jerry Holway once told me “Give a master violin player a second hand piece of wood with strings and he’ll be able to play a song, give the same person a Stradivarius and it becomes art”. A great operator can achieve the best shot in the world with the right type of gear, as for a gymnast, this is very similar. I’ve seen a world class gymnast fall of a highbar during an olympic event final, because the flex of the bar was just a little different, the chalk didn’t feel right and 4 years later, that same guy had all the right elements to make “Art” and he brought home the gold medal. I take care of my rig the same way I take care of all the pieces of apparatus in the gym and they both continue to deliver wonderful results. Last part I wanted to touch upon was the matter of safety. Running with a rig down a slippery rocky hill or throwing yourself 4 feet in the air over a solid steel bar, just because that’s what people expect from you can lead to one of two things. Either you get a standing ovation for a fantastic running shot/catching the bar, or you end up breaking your neck. The fact that the latter hasn’t happened to me is because my coaches have always demanded a safe training environement, which I held dear to my heart. I carried on this habit from the moment I first started operating, every running shot I do, every hardmount I rig, every single precarious situation I encounter on set, safety is always my number 1 concern. The main conclusion for me is that both disciplines have had major benefits towards each other and I can only recommend combining sports with operating steadicam. Any other (former) athletes on the forum? I’d love to hear your take on how steadicam may have improved your performances or how your choice of sport has helped out in your operating. Greetings Nils

  20. Hey everyone, I am new to this arena. I just want to establish that. I tend to ask a lot of questions, sometimes annoying questions about obvious things. These questions may seem obvious to a seasoned operator but this is how I learn, by asking dumb questions. Like this: How does an unestablished operator become a better operator? I thought this meant purchasing a smaller, affordable rig like a Pilot or Scout to practice with? I don't mean to purchase such a rig and then go directly to work on big shows. But that is what it seems like. This is a professional's forum and I appreciate being welcome to interact with all of the seasoned pros in this wonderful community. But how am I supposed to learn from you without asking obvious questions? To be taken seriously and not damage my fragile reputation, do I need to take out a loan from the bank and spend $30K - $50K on a real rig like the Ultra 2 or MK1?? Even though I have no experience whatsoever? That is the vibe I seem to be getting. When I mention the Pilot or Zephyr, if I sound like an amateur, it is because I am just that. I am just getting started on union shows as a grip trying to make a living and support my daughter. The Steadicam dream is very real for me but I am a little confused about how to approach these matters without seeming amateurish? Yes, I plan on taking a workshop. Yes, I know this is professional gear and the gear is a tool in which we use to perform a craft, so it must be the right tool. But I have to start somewhere, right? I have been reading a lot of posts for about a month now, and most of the what I am reading is buy a real rig, even though you have no experience operating. So I am supposed to invest $30K - $50K on a tool of which I have no experience to even be taken seriously on this forum? I am just trying to get to know you all better. Please forgive me for asking dumb questions. This is how I learn from you. : )
  21. ** Last Minute Opening ** Advanced Aesthetics and Stabilizer Systems Workshop Five Days - June 8-12, 2015 - Los Angeles (Post CineGear) Real Rigs! Real Cameras! Real Studio Sets! Real Actors! This workshop is for owner / operators who already have a solid command of the rig and are at the point that the physical operation of the rig is second nature. While we will certainly offer tips and techniques to refine your operating techniques, there will be no “line dances” unless you want one to warm up on. Our focus is on creative shot design, choreography, interaction with DP, Director, actors, other departments and the use of various stabilizer systems to create the perfect flow, emotion and composition to deliver the scenes. We will incorporate hands-on training with new stabilizer systems and technologies including Ronin to rig and other multi-axis systems. Bring a drive with you and we will ship it back to you. Lunch and craft services provided. You will leave this workshop with many new skills, new skills on new systems, a heightened awareness and understanding of shot choreography, camera motivation and the ability to offer a higher level of creative solutions to DP’s and Directors. Most importantly you will leave this workshop with the knowledge and confidence that you can meet most any challenge presented to you. Due to the very short nature of this opening / cancellation please contact me directly at robert@starling.com or via phone at 702-810-5707 - SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE! Thank you!
  22. Steadicam Master Series rig. Master Series Sled with 3 recelled master series batteries and 5-channel charger. The sled is SD and currently has a Bon BPM-071s HD-SDI/HDMI daylight viewable monitor. The monitor was just serviced and contains many new interior components. The sled comes in the original case from Cinema Products and The Monitor comes in a Pelican 1400 case. Master/Ultra arm. The arm had a complete servicing and rebuild with new bearings at Tiffen about 18 months ago, which cost around $2500. Since then the arm has received some superficial surface corrosion due to being packed in a pelican case in high humidity. The damage is all-superficial. The arm is in perfect working order. The arm comes with bag. Master Series vest. The vest shows signs of wear but it still works great and is in decent condition. Also comes with a bag Chrosziel Genio follow focus system with Hayden motor and 2 batteries. 15lb weight plate - A weight plate I purchased from Janice Arthur. Ideal for flying small light weight cameras on the rig. There's also a pelican case of accessories including Extra Rods, Power Cables, Extra Screws etc. Price - $13,000 The Rig is located in NYC. I'm happy to deliver in the area or ship nation wide. Any questions or if you would like to see more pictures please let me know.
  23. Hi all, I currently own a Varizoom Aviator and have been in the market to upgrade to something that can handle more weight. At least in a 20-30lb max range. I came across the CAME steadicam carbon fiber stabalizer, and it's only $900 with a max out at something like 33lbs. It is made in China, but a lot of people are reviewing it, at least a lot of consumers. Of course I'm looking to get something made by Steadicam or Glidecam or any of the noteworthy brands, but do any of you have any opinions of have tested out one of these CAME guys? Please let me know!! Thank you. Link to product http://www.came-tv.com/came-2515kg-load-pro-camera-steadicam-video-carbon-stabilizers-p-88.html - James
