  1. Basically thoughts and possible difficulties of this? Cinemilled offers an adapter which forgoes the need for a sled, just DJI Ronin with its stabilization straight to the armpost adapter. Pictures and video from the Cinemilled Site. http://vimeo.com/105086034 From: Cinemilled It seems to have lowmode ability as well. Looks like a good idea to me. For the more advanced operators. Would this work with a cheaper vest and armpost setup something offbrand. Any manufacturing deficiencies or precision due to not being Tiffen Steadicam should easily be compensated by the DJI Ronin itself I would think. *edit - nevermind that, they have recommended weight restrictions either way the X-10 looks to be the best bet. Looking to use this instead of a typical steadicam rig for more versatility. Thanks in advance! --- Alternately to save money I can get different weight springs. Thoughts on taking out existing springs from the merlin steadicam arm and vest and putting new ones in for heavier weight. ---
  2. I am looking to buy only the sled. No arm or vest needed. Neither do I need the monitor I already have a Marshall HD monitor. Anyone wishing to unload just the sled feel free to respond. Looking for at least a Zephyr in terms of weight handling thanks!
  3. I had the Merlin2 arm and vest. Turns out my rig is too heavy. It weighs in at (cut down) around 24 lbs. Full rig weight can be anywhere between 24-30 depending. Scale accuracy aside im looking to get one that will work with my rig. I primarily do live events so on the go. I use my two DSLRs as secondary cameras so I just want something I can use to quickly take my rig off a tripod and transfer to the steadicam for quick movement shots, or simply place on the sled and support the entire time. I've done some research. Looking at the pricing it seems there isnt anything for less than $5,000 or so that will work with my primary camera. Not sure if anyone knows, however is there a way to buy just a heavy duty sled and not all the extra bells and whistles. I already have a Marshall broadcast monitor and hookups so thats not an issue I dont need all that extra stuff I really just need a quality steadicam that is smooth for heavier weights. Option one aside, there is also the option of using a smaller stabilizer with one of the DSLRs. Thats fine, however that brings to mind the question of using a sled or using a curve. Going again, barebones with the Merlin or a different route perhaps the new Steadicam Solo (although im concerned about durability with that one. Not sure of the pros and cons of either. The curve ones I believe may have more sway in the wind so a sled might be better. Alot of my work is outdoors. That being said, looking for advice thanks in advance.
  4. For Sale my original Master Series Steadicam Vest. Yes, it's old. Yes, it needs TLC But, if your just starting out and need a good vest, and don't mind putting some work into things, this is a good choice. It needs a socket block and some creative work on the webbing. Years ago I replaced the leather with plastic and webbing to make it lighter and quieter. Padding is good I'm asking $1000 obo Mike 818-207-8156

  7. I have a Pilot and I'm looking for tips on running. Basically the main issue I see is that as soon as I start moving at a relatively quick pace, I start seeing vertical jiggles in the video. I've narrowed down the issue to the vibrations transferring from either my left hand on the gimble/post, or to my right hand on the handle (most likely the latter). Running at high(er) speeds makes it more difficult to keep the camera/post in control which makes me have the tendency to try to keep it in control, resulting in more contact/gripping of the handle. I also look at my feet control and rather than taking large strides like one would normally do while running, I take smaller controlled steps. The main problem is that it becomes difficult to reach the high speed I want and it gets really tiring. So just looking for tips on what works for you. Now I am in no way comparing stabilizers/technique here... but I recently watched a parkour video based on the Assassin's Creed video game. It was shot on Glidecam 4000 with a RED and no vest, so you can imagine the sheer weight the camera op had to hold during each shot. Now what intrigued me was how he was able to film high speed running scenes with nary any jiggles like what I'm seeing -- and I'm not even running as fast as him.
  8. Currently shooting a few indies right now and was looking into buying an on-board/field monitor for myself. I would preferably want to go with something that gives good light outside, so i'm assuming i'll need something with a good amount of nits. I've heard TVLogic carries a sun bright monitor, but haven't checked one out before. Anyone have experience with this? Also, has anyone heard of Bon monitors? I hear they carry outdoor monitors as well? Thanks!
  9. Hi everybody In light of a lot of sports/steadicam related discussions I figured, why not share my experience. As some of you may know, besides being a steadicam operator, I’ve been an avid competitive gymnast for over 23 years. I just wanted to take the time to write up a small article about gymnastics and the steadicam life and how I feel the two have influenced each other over the past years. Comparing the two has made sense to me since the day I picked up a rig. Like many athletes, gymnasts spend years practicing and developing skills before entering official compeition. The same goes for steadicam, in the beginning, one spends a lot of time developing the strength and insight into what makes a great operator on smaller projects before being able to work on a feature film or a tv-series. Both disciplines (cause let’s face it, steadicam doesn’t involve sitting around doing nothing) require a great deal of strength and stamina. For me personally the two have had tremendous benefits towards one another. Due to my sports background I was able to quickly adapt the musclememory needed to operate this wonderful machine, in return, the more jobs I keep getting, the stronger my legs and back get, making it possible for me to achieve new heights in gymnastics (literally). Though a lot of attention has to be directed towards correct posture, stretching, preventing exertion, both operating steadicam and gymnastics require a bit more than just the physical aspects. I’m talking about the gear, Jerry Holway once told me “Give a master violin player a second hand piece of wood with strings and he’ll be able to play a song, give the same person a Stradivarius and it becomes art”. A great operator can achieve the best shot in the world with the right type of gear, as for a gymnast, this is very similar. I’ve seen a world class gymnast fall of a highbar during an olympic event final, because the flex of the bar was just a little different, the chalk didn’t feel right and 4 years later, that same guy had all the right elements to make “Art” and he brought home the gold medal. I take care of my rig the same way I take care of all the pieces of apparatus in the gym and they both continue to deliver wonderful results. Last part I wanted to touch upon was the matter of safety. Running with a rig down a slippery rocky hill or throwing yourself 4 feet in the air over a solid steel bar, just because that’s what people expect from you can lead to one of two things. Either you get a standing ovation for a fantastic running shot/catching the bar, or you end up breaking your neck. The fact that the latter hasn’t happened to me is because my coaches have always demanded a safe training environement, which I held dear to my heart. I carried on this habit from the moment I first started operating, every running shot I do, every hardmount I rig, every single precarious situation I encounter on set, safety is always my number 1 concern. The main conclusion for me is that both disciplines have had major benefits towards each other and I can only recommend combining sports with operating steadicam. Any other (former) athletes on the forum? I’d love to hear your take on how steadicam may have improved your performances or how your choice of sport has helped out in your operating. Greetings Nils

  13. Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a steadicam Alexa plate to mount it directly to my zephyr but most companies told me that they made the plates for the "steadicam ultra" sled size. I want to see if anybody knows if the zephyr and the ultra have the same dovetail plate size, if not which plate do you advise for the zephyr? Many Thanks.

  21. Hey, I got a shooting coming up in 5 days with the Alexa XT, it's my first time to fly an Alexa XT on my zephyr and I'm a bit worried. I will receive the 2nd battery hanger, the steady-Alexa plate and the 24V cable in a couple of days. The setup will include the camera, an Arri Master Prime Lens and a bartech wireless follow focus. Anyone has a previous experience with this cam on this rig? Will I be able to fly it in Low mode (hips level) or no chance? I'm planning to power up the Bartech from the sled also. Any advice is much appreciated. Many Thanks, Christopher
