  5. Announcing the autumn workshop in the Steadicam Operators Association series at Historic Yellow Springs, one hour from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The long-established workshop goes into its 26th consecutive year training Steadicam operators from around the world. Dates for the workshop are November 1 to 6. A great team of operators teach at the workshops. I’m joined by Garrett Brown, inventor of the Steadicam, Chris Fawcett, inventor of the Steadiseg and Exovest, and Jay Kilroy, who both teaches and runs the show. Other established Steadicam operators/instructors and assistants round out the teaching staff, providing a truly broad perspective and experience base from the film, broadcast, and documentary worlds. The intensive 5½ day workshop covers all the essentials of Steadicam operating, plus in-depth analysis and experiences. Hands-on training begins immediately, with exercises transitioning quickly into real-life shots. While we concentrate on operating skills, we have a broad spectrum of gear to use – from the “big” Steadicams like the Ultra 2, Shadow, and the new M-1, to the smaller Zephyr’s, and even some handheld units. We use several different arms and vests (and you can bring your own vest as well). We also have lots of accessories to work with. Tilt-heads, motorized stages, super-posts, follow focus gear, playback monitors, Tango™, and more. We’ll have a full-on vehicle day with crane step-ons and offs, car mounts, quad mount, and the Steadiseg; and further training on the Skatedolly and a Rickshaw. We also have a set of wheels to play with – it’s an operating skill we think all Steadicam operators should have. You’ll work hard all day – starting before breakfast! We end each day with beer and wine and evening lectures, including Garrett Brown’s famous “Moving Image,” Chris Fawcett’s “Steadicam Posture,” and a Live Multicam presentation. The food is great, and it all takes place in the amazingly photogenic surroundings of Historic Yellow Springs. Our primary space is an original pre-Civil War building, and we have extensive use of the space and the surrounding gardens. Come experience the Mid-Atlantic fall, and join the workshop that has started many of today’s greatest Steadicam operators on their long and successful careers. 8. I've been looking into the Tiffen workshops more and more lately and have been considering enrolling. How much operating experience do most people usually have while enrolled in these? I ask because I'm relatively inexperienced with Steadicams and I wouldn't want to enroll being WAY too beginner for the course. Also, are the Tiffen workshops for operators who already know their way around the equipment well?

  13. Continuing our commitment to provide the highest level training, rigs and accessories, I am very pleased to announce our new strategic partnership between Teradak Wireless HD Video and The Stabilizer Workshops. Teradek designs and manufactures a complete range of traditional RF HD and WiFi HD transmitter solutions from portable sled mount devices to rack mount location and studio applications. The Stabilizer Workshops will initially feature the Teradek Bolt systems and eventually add their WiFi based CUBE as well. Specifications on the Bolt include: The only fully integrated and affordable zero latency wireless video transmission system 4:2:2 color sampling and support for all standard resolutions and frame rates up to 1080p60 Multicast capable up to 4 receivers simultaneously (Pro version only) Mix/match HDMI and 3G-SDI transmitters and receivers, even in multicast setups 6-28V Lemo power Up to 300ft line of sight transmission distance Built-in Li-Ion battery in the TX Timecode, metadata, and record flag pass-through coming soon to Bolt Pro SDI via free firmware upgrade Bolt Pro SDI starts at $2490, Bolt Pro HDMI starts at $1790 In my personal experience with the Bolt in very very complex and crowded RF environments such as NAB, the Bolt held and maintained a solid signal up to about 100 feet where our other HD transmitter system could not even get a signal lock. The small size of the transmitter and receiver make it a natural and affordable choice for Steadicam and handheld applications. Teradek also makes sled specific power cables or the flexible PTap to Lemo power cable. They also have active involvement and a presence here on the Steadicam Forum where they are directly available for questions, comments and suggestions. Teradek joins INOVATIV Carts, GPI-PRO Stabilizer Systems and Division Camera as key partners to help us provide you with a unique full featured workshop curriculum, small classes and personalized training using big rigs, real cameras and complete accessory packages for your workshop experience. For more information visit: http://www.teradek.com Or contact me via email, phone or PM. Robert http://stabilizerworkshops.com

  18. Not sure if this is the right place to post so please let me know if it should be place somewhere else. (First topic post) I am located in Washington, DC and wanted to see if anyone out there is looking for an assistant on their steadicam projects. As much as I want to attend the SOA workshop in Philly, I don't have $2600 to invest right now. If it is the right opportunity where I can learn a lot, I'm willing to travel. I bought the Steadicam Operator's Handbook and have learned a lot but learn a lot better when onset and hands on. If anyone has recommendations to who I could contact or even if you would like an assistant please let me know. When I started learning how to light, operate a camera and 'see the room', being on set is where I learned the most. On a side note, if anyone can recommend other workshops on the East Coast that are not as expensive as the SOA, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  19. Hey Everyone, The SOA wishes everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Our May 2013 dates have been announced, please pass the word, May 19-24. http://www.steadicam-ops.com/workshop.shtml
