  2. So its been good time now, and im ready to move up to the big rigs. Im flying loaded Alexa, EPIC, 45lb+ set ups weekly, but its a cheap knock off and is not going to cut it any longer. It's time to move up. What would anyone recommend for my first professional sled (with $$$ of course being the #1 factor here). Looking for something with dual AB mounts, 24v, solid LEMO taps for my Bartech and accessories. I'm looking to get a master series arm, and thereby also looking at the master sled (good pricing) but I'm worried it's not modular enough for future upgrades. Or would it be more beneficial to just get one and sell it later one down the road? Thank you.
  3. hey yall I had just thrown up a photo of my new case on another thread and already got someone interested, so I figured Id put out a review on it. I had my case custom built by Thermodyne. It is inspired by the Archer2 case that I used to have, also by Thermodyne. Thermodyne was used to the Tiffen sleds and cases claimed to have never seen another rig, so they did whatever scanning and 3D mapping they needed. They let me meet with the gentleman who was actually doing the scanning and cutting and treated me like I was putting in an order for hundreds even though it was just one case. I had to leave my rig with them for a few days so that they could come up with a configuration. I asked them to cut the mold for the sled and to cut several cavities for aks since I knew there would be room. I can fit my plates, cables, kneepads/AB twin charger and 2 Dionics. There is enough room to keep my hyperdeck attached to the back of my monitor as well. My arm (atlas) folds in 90 deg and I had them put my spare canisters in as well. I asked for a two-tier system and the shelf is not flimsy foam, but is a 1/8" thick plastic shelf which is sandwiched in foam. The case also has an extending luggage handle and two durable wheels, as well as three very sturdy spring loaded handles for lifting. Just to let you know, the case with the rig is beefier and heavier than I was expecting, but I have come to not mind, because it is holding my first born and I feel very confident putting it on a plane, as I used to do with my Archer2 back when. So I guess second born. Here are the dimensions in the laying position (as photographed): 30" wide x 22.5" tall x 23.5" deep and its weighs in at about 40 pounds. It has 4 mickey mouse twisting clasps and a place to lock it with TSA or padlock. With tax it came to $640. The whole process from dropping off the rig to picking up the case was probably 14 days, which may have been a little long, but I think it had to do with mapping, configuring, testing, cutting, etc. They sent me the sketches along the way. So far the case has been excellent in every way, except maybe lifting. The large flat top has been nice as a small table of last resort, with a few grooves so my screws dont goin spinning around. It is heavy, maybe close to 40 pounds, and it is wide, and Im not a big dude, so I ramp it up into my truck typically and have an AC help it out of my vehicle. you can see it on the thermodyne website (thermodyne.com) It is the third picture in the slide show. I dealt with Bill Morgan, and he was super easy to work with. Thermodyne is about 45 minutes straight shot east on I-10/60. William MorganSr. Sales Thermodyne International Ltd. Ontario, CA USA CAGE Code 29724 bill@thermodyne.comP. 909.923.9945 F. 909.923.7505 If youve got any questions, let me know or contact Bill. They can set you up with this configuration for a PRO CineLive and Atlas, but if you have a different rig they may need to get it inhouse for a day or two, except maybe Tiffen rigs, for which I am pretty sure they have already built cases. brett.
  4. Is anyone mounting the new SmallHD High Bright on a Pro Monitor Arm? I haven't been able to find any good mounts that go to a Pro Spud. Pro doesn't make one and I've left multiple messages/e-mails for Howard at MK-V without hearing anything back. What are you using? If there aren't any good solutions, is there any interest in having Pro make a custom CNC'd batch? Thanks everyone.

  6. Camera Positioning Systems, a Canadian machine shop specializing in Libra head and camera accessory manufacturing, has built a fantastic mounting plate for Arri Alexa cameras. This plate is CNC machined from aluminum and anodized black. The underside is hollowed out to save weight, while still maintaining structural integrity. The plate is designed to mount directly into a Pro sled (or similar). It features a slight cutout in the bevel (pictured) on one side which acts as a safety on Pro rigs preventing the plate and camera from sliding off if loosened too much. This plate mounts directly into the Alexa camera body (no other plates required). It features a small captive brass button that slides into the cleat at the back of the camera to increase rigidity and reduce flexing of the camera fore and aft. Both the brass button and the mounting block at the front can be adjusted left to right in unison and locked in position to fine tune side-to-side positioning of the camera on the sled. This is crucial to dynamic balance and provides fast repeatable results for every build. Convenient captive screws mount into the camera body and are tightened with the handy 5/32" T Handle used for everything else on the Pro sled. These are 3D CAD designed and built in Canada. Camera Positioning Systems have been designing and manufacturing custom remote heads, accessories, plates, and brackets for many years now. Similar plates go for at least $650. If interested, please check out the online store for Camera Positioning Systems at http://www.cameragak.com where you can place an order. There are many other great and handy brackets and plates for sale there too. http://www.cameragak.com/products/61-ARRI-Alexa-Steadicam-Baseplate/
  7. Hello everybody! Warm November greetings from St. Petersburg, Russia. Mostly I work as DoP and was not planning to be a professional steadicam operator. However, a year ago one of my projects called for a lot of steadicam shots, producers couldn't afford to hire a steadicam operator for so many days, so I bought a Tiffen Zephyr HD. I enjoyed it very much, until I hit its limitations. It never failed me though. I thought it’s nice to have a rig always on set, flying it when needed, but never actually considered using it outside my own projects. It was only when fellow DoPs started calling and asking me to fly their cameras, I realized it was time to upgrade. In September I made up my mind finally. The choice was anything but easy. So I want to share my experience with others, who might find themselves in the same situation. Being based in Russia, my choice was less affected by the place where the manufacturer was based. I just wanted the gear to be reliable and, well… the best I could afford. I started with the arm. Just reading through this forum the PRO arm felt like the best choice. Concerning reliability and simplicity mostly. So I quickly found out that the closest place I could get one was Betz Tools in Munchen. By that time I knew something about the Betz RIG, but VERY little info could be found on this forum or elsewhere. Writing all this because I basically feel that I could have used this kind of info myself while still choosing. For some reason Christian is very conservative with advertising his sled. Although it's just great. It shows more than 30 years of Christian's experience in the business. All the tiny details are thoroughly thought through (typically German). The precision and quality are also top notch, of course. The thing is pricey, that is true. In fact it is as expensive as any hi-end rig, but well worth the money. If any of you want to know more about my personal experience with the rig, I'll gladly share. However, it's not just the rig that was worth the trip to Munich. It is something I would call "the Betz Experience". Christian really helped me with everything and I spent two pleasant days with him, Isabel and Alex in Munich. There was no rush so I could try on all the different vests, sleds and arms. Christian never pushed or urged my decision, and honestly gave his opinion about everything. It felt more like a friendly workshop, rather than browsing the store. It was fun. I quickly understood that, while choosing the right steadicam, you don’t have to be committed to one particular brand. For example, my system now consists of a Betz HD rig, PRO Titan arm and a Sachtler vest. I have tried every vest they had in store, including the Exovest and Klassen. Sachtler simply fitted me the best. Christian gave his advice on what in his opinion was needed and which gadgets and parts were actually of less importance. Some of the parts he actually modified on the spot, specially for me. For example he upgraded the tilt plate with 2 additional locking nuts, so that it felt absolutely rigid. We called it "Russian edition" ;) To conclude, I feel like it was the right path with Betz Tools. It is great when people care more about your long term involvement with the craft. So if you feel strong about your passion with steadicam operating, you should definitely rely on such people. Hope this opus of mine came out not too long ) My first steadicam. Home made with my dad. My second steadicam (for sale), with my lovely wife (not for sale). My third steadicam All the best, Nikita

  13. I am selling the GPI PRO Cinema HD Upper and Lower Junction Boxes. Will only be sold as a set. They are the Cinema HD (formally HD-Upgrade) electronics housings. These Have the Tally Option . And the Lower electronics housing has 12 volt out on the recorder lemo, instead of the 5v or 9v of the past. I use this to feed SD video and power a program monitor for live broadcast shows. I will include a Tally cable for the top that I had Terry custom make that has the sensor, as well as two other LED lights op top, so you can tape the sensor to the camera, and tape an LED to the top or bottom of your Lens shade/Mattebox, and have another LED to place on the side of the camera facing you while you operate so if your looking up when your camera goes live, you can react faster. At the bottom is a Cable that has a 90 deg Lemo for the bottom of the sled and a Bright LED you can tape or Velcro to the top of your monitor. Both Housings are in perfect working order. Condition is like new. You can purchase an HD Center Post cable from PRO for $665 and you're good to go. Pro sells the Cinema HD set for $5165 + $800 for Tally Option, Terry charged $250 to make the top and bottom Tally Cables, So we're talking $6215 plus shipping. Price for everything is $4700 and is available for immediate shipping. Located in Miami, prefer local sale. Will ship international at buyer's expense. I accept cash. I can also accept a credit card/PayPal payment with a 3% transaction fee. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Email me off the forum for a faster reply. Ozzie@silverafilm.com
