  15. I picked up a Connex Mini from Camera Motion Research and thought I'd post a few thoughts. I use Teradek 2000's as primary transmitters, from cameras to my DP station. Where I needed an extra transmitter was to send a quad split of the cameras out to various viewing points, such as handheld director's monitor and a large TV used by the hair, makeup and wardrobe folk. In the past I had an original Paralinx Arrow on the handheld monitor, and regularly had interference issues with it. I thought I'd try out the Connex mini as a replacement. Camera Motion Research offers the Mini at a competitive price to the usual online resellers and also offers a unique accessory package. Rich Greb at CMR set me up with their full package, which includes standard rod antennas for the receiver rather than the strip ones that are normally supplied with the Mini. The package also includes battery cages for both components that provide additional mounting points and piggyback lithium packs, plus various cables including p-tap. I opted for the Connex Mini vs its larger brother because I preferred the smaller form factor for the receiver end, and a better price point. The difference between their spec'd range is 3300 ft for the Connex and 1600 for the Mini. These are intended for aerial units where such distinction is relevant--for my purposes, what I was looking for was robust performance up to, say, 100 ft, but given the amount of wireless floating around in a typical set it's much better to have more than you need! These are HDMI based units which of course require conversion if one is in an SDI workflow. For my application, I'm able to connect to the unused HDMI port from my Decimator MD-Quad for the transmitter and the handheld monitor and vanity TV both have HDMI inputs, so this is fine. The transmitter uses the micro HDMI connector and power is via the RC-type VST connector, both of which are quite delicate. This may be a dealbreaker for those looking to use the Mini directly on a camera because you really have to aggressively protect these ports and cables from being whacked or tugged. My transmitter is mounted behind the top monitor on my cart, safely out of the way so I don't have to worry about it. CMR tells me they are working on some solutions to this. I'm waiting for the receiver modules to be sold separately which should happen within the next month. In the meantime we were using the receiver on a 42" TV which was of course static, but the performance was functionally identical to hardwired. I tested it on the handheld monitor, walked it around the stages and found it to be better than expected--it passed through cinderblock walls without a single glitch at distances of several hundred feet, only losing signal once I stepped outside the stage at that distance--and re-linking was very fast. Extremely impressive. There is no visible delay in the image. The system operates on the 5ghz band and and dynamic frequency selection, but you cannot select channels manually. I think for those looking for an affordable onboard transmitter, this is a solid contender performance-wise but with functional caveats. Most cameras output SDI, and you could add an SDI to HDMI converter. Blackmagic has a very small one now, it takes 5v USB, but that's a bit of a klugy package to bundle all of this onto a camera. And as previously noted, you'll need to strain relief the heck out of the power and video cables on the transmitter to keep them from being yanked. For my purposes, this setup is working great, and I like knowing that I own a robust, tiny 1080p wireless system that I could pull out of its current configuration if a specialty application (where the Teradek 2000's were too large) presented itself.
  16. hey yall i have a lightly-used teradek 2000 kit here. kit is in awesome condition. i am selling because i am just not interested in accessories right now. working on building out another rig and other kinds of gear. -1 transmitter in anton bauer cage with pass-through power -1 receiver in anton bauer cage with pass-through power all sorts of cables hardware for mounting extra antennae extra screws, etc. recently sent to teradek for pre-sale inspection. then tested by an AC. it all checks out great. the anton bauer cages are by far the best way of mounting these. i have two sidekicks that I am willing to sell with the kit if that is a deal-maker. i already have a buyer for these, so i will not part them out separately, they will only be included if you want the whole shabang. one sidekick includes a mount. im feelin 7500 for everything EXCEPT sidekicks. if you want the sidekicks as well then 10200 located in atlanta let me know if you are interested. feel free to reach out with any questions. but lets talk before you start haggling. brett.

  18. Hi Everyone, My name is Katy Most I’m a Camera Operator/DP and just recently started to fly Steadicam. I love this wonderful tool, since it adds so much flexibility and creativity to your work! Recently, I had to shoot a campaign for a clothing collection for a client of mine. I had an old Flyer with a Canon 5D available for the shoot, but it didn’t have any transmitter in place. I was in need of providing a monitor for the client and the director. So, I started my search for the best available option. My research led me to so many interesting discoveries. There are many options in the market nowadays and most of these professional’s solutions are very expensive. I looked at products like IDX CW-5HD Cam Wave HD Wireless Transmitter / Receiver System and Paralinx Arrow HD Wireless Kit and Teradek Bolt Pro TX+RX Wireless HD-SDI Video Transmitter... and AbelCine Wireless Video Solution :: Wireless Transmitters :: Studio on the low cost side. But, the power solution with my Flyer and Canon 5D wasn’t the easiest to figure out. Anyway, The Steadicam guys from Tiffen who are always amazing, suggested to me that I look up the IDX new CW-1 Wireless HDMI Type Video Transmission System. This was good advice since it is a reliable, compact and affordable, option. I decided to follow their advice and check the system out. I own IDX batteries and chargers and I love them, so this company was already familiar to me. Anyway, cut to the chase, this IDX CW-1 transmitter and receiver system delivers crystal clear images between 30-328ft and transmits uncompressed full HD 1920x1080type. I found this system to be vey reliable. We were shooting in numerous locations near Marina Del Ray and on a yacht and this system worked perfectly. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that it takes around 1 min. to catch the signal again if you turn it off. Here is a fast overview of how I used this system on set with my particular setup: 1. We didn’t have a Blackmagic downconverter and since Canon 5D doesn’t output two signals simultaneously while recording we used this system as a fast and reliable playback right after we finished the shot. I was operating and it gave me flexibility to review the shot before moving forward. 2. Mini HDMI cable went from the camera to regular HDMI to the transmitter (it was unplugged during the shot). The receiver through HDMI cable was connected to the Director’s monitor, which received the signal from the camera. There are many options that you could choose from while using this system. For example, you can use a Blackmagic downconverter. From there, one BNC cable to the sled and one HDMI cable to the the CW-1 transmitter, is a configuration you can choose. If you have an HD monitor on your sled, you can set up your transmitter on there and you wouldn’t need the Blackmagic downconverter. You can just run the cable from Canon 5D to the sled and from your Sled’s HD monitor run the HDMI cable to the transmitter. Also, if you have cameras that output multiple signals then this system is very affordable and easy to use. Anyway, I would like to hear your stories about your set ups and what transmitters you used etc. As well, maybe I wasn’t familiar with other options that I could use in that situation. I would like to hear about your choices, too. I hope the expereince I have described here in this article will be useful to other DP/Operators and we can dig deeper into the issues and find helpful solutions for each other.
  19. I am selling my two(2) IDX Camwave CW-7 transmitters with V-lock battery plates. Transmit uncompressed 422 1080p HD-SDI up to 330'(100m). Original boxes and manuals included. Range and connection compares to Teradek Bolt 300 Pro. Asking $1250 each or both sets together for $2000. Shipping included.
