Premium Members Emmanuel Dinh Posted October 1, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 1, 2014 Adam, I own both a Pilot (for documentary) and an Archer2 (mainly for live TV). Nevertheless, for some reasons a few days ago I have just performed a live TV with my Pilot (https://www.facebook.com/dinhemma/photos/pb.319177201509583.-2207520000.1412136860./698365620257404/?type=3&theater). Although everything was perfectly fine, you should keep in mind that : - this configuration is only possible with handy-cams (ex : PMW-200), not with bigger TV cameras (ex : PMW-500) ; therefore you have to be sure that your camera will meet TV requirements (brand, low light performances...) ;- you will have almost no room to improve / expand your rig, because of very limited max payload (10 lbs) ;- the Pilot is far more sensitive that bigger rigs, so it is less "safe" to operate when you don't have a second take...For these reasons, except you have a very precise market which exactly matches Pilot's abilities, I would suggest buying a bigger rig that will last longer and will make you more confortable and confident to operate. The Zephyr should be a good option.
Adam Berland
Emmanuel would recommend any other brands?
Premium Members Emmanuel Dinh Posted October 1, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 1, 2014 Sorry Adam, don't know about others. All I can say is that I am very happy with both my Archer2 and Pilot. I would suggest to be very careful about cheap brands, because there is no second take ; you need a rig you can trust in. Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted October 1, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 1, 2014 Hi Adam, before you consider buying a rig, have you taken a workshop? If not, I couldn't recommend it more. You will get to learn about the different rigs there and make your own decision. One of the big things to look for on the rigs are the weight capacity so check your camera weight.
Adam Berland
Hey victor I have taken the workshop and it mainly focus film not the live broadcast part. I was only person that broadcast experience. I'm trying find someone similar experience as what I have. Thanks for your help!
Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted October 1, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 1, 2014 Gotcha, What cameras/equipment are you planning on using with the Steadicam? For the Tiffen rigs, they add a -V at the end of the name for the rigs designed for live. It does not mean that another rig will not work, but the -V series have a Tally and video return lines already installed plus a few cool tweaks with live broadcast in mind. The Pilot will only carry at 9lb camera. That's really light if you work in live. Get a rig that can fly the heaviest camera you plan on using. Premium Members David M. Aronson Posted October 2, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 2, 2014 The Pro Cine live sled it good for broadcast. As is most of the Tiffen rigs above the Archer 2. Sactler also makes some good broadcast sleds. Try some other ops' rigs. We can't tell you what you'll like.
