Premium Members Ramon Engle Posted February 15, 2016 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 15, 2016 I need a monitor with great off angle viewability. I know OLED's offer the best but they are such low brightness I'm thinking of going with an LCD. Anyone have any experience with SmallHD's gear? I'll be using this monitor in all kinds of weird angles on my sled in conjunction with the Omega. So the monitor will be everywhere and tough to see at times. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks Ramon
Premium Members Ian Forsyth Posted February 15, 2016 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 15, 2016 Love my Small HD 702. Small profile & 1000 nits could work well for your needs.
Premium Members brooksrobinson Posted February 15, 2016 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 15, 2016 I have owned two of the SmallHD DP7's for about a year. They work well on stage, but have serious issues when the sun hits them just so, and the screen goes completely out. Angling the monitor with my Cam-Jam yokes usually helps, but that isn't always apparent on the first take and flying blind isn't fun. Others have stated that they are too light without an onboard battery, but that is more of a personal preference thing, and perhaps for your use that wouldn't be an issue. I've also heard people complain about the image latency but I think most of that comes from the camera body itself, not the monitor. I've been happy with my purchases except for daylight viewing when the sun hits that perfect angle and the image goes completely away. I've just completed a show in the Dominican Republic with lots of daylight exterior work and it has been troublesome enough that I'm actually in the process of looking for suitable replacements. I also own a SmallHD 702, which is a great onboard monitor for traditional operating, but it is far too light and reflective for use on the rig, at least for my taste. Good luck with your search! Premium Members Ramon Engle Posted February 15, 2016 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted February 15, 2016 Ian and Brooks thanks. My real issue is being off angle either well below or to the side of the monitor. How do either of these monitors perform from those perspectives? Premium Members brooksrobinson Posted February 15, 2016 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 15, 2016 I've never had any issues with the DP7's off axis viewing but I've only used it on a conventional XCS sled and not in the way you might be using it. Hopefully others will chime in - good luck! Brooks
Premium Members Lawrence Karman Posted February 16, 2016 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 16, 2016 As Brooks said: I also own a SmallHD 702, which is a great onboard monitor for traditional operating, but it is far too light and reflective for use on the rig, at least for my taste. Good luck with your search! But it does have great off angle view-ability.
Henrique Araujo
I've just got a Boland BVB07 recently and it's quite bright and viewable. I did a quick video this morning to show the view ability. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3U4qcLsnG61dUI1dnhhZUFucjg/view?usp=sharing I apologize for the low light around it but my living room lights couldn't keep up with the monitor brightness. Apart from the reflections in the protective screen (I was too lazy to take it off) you can see the monitor from any angle.
Premium Members Mike McGowan SOC Posted February 17, 2016 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 17, 2016 I've been using my (what was my operators monitor) dp7 high bright as my sled monitor for about 6 months now. Without the protective screen on the front (and I don't see any reason for one) i find it super bright, super viewable in direct sunlight and as viewable off angle as anything I've ever used (including my pro greenie, several bolands and my cinetronic gen 2 (which I sold). They are on sale now on b&H for 2k (because small hd is going to stop making them). I might pick another one up myself. Also never had the 'too light' issue. There's plenty of shit below the gimbal, I don't need any more weight in the monitor. And if I did, I could slap an anton bauer battery on the back I suppose.
Premium Members Ramon Engle Posted March 1, 2016 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 1, 2016 Hey guys. Thanks for all of your input. I've purchased mine and should get it in a day or so. Couple of AC's on my show were raving about them as well. Really looking forward to using it. Thanks again. Ramon
