Matt Sanderson
Hello folks: Ok, I've been reading through the posts before joining and it seems as though there are a few crotchety types in the mix. Just so you know, don't you leap before you look, I have the teeth of a crock, the hair on my back can only be described as wild boar and when I decide to throw my weight around I can really cause some damage. I'm uglier and scarier looking than you can possibly imagine. I'm a 220 pounder with lots of vertical leverage so bite your tongues you meanies. Have I operated a rig before, damn right I have. I'm buying a new rig this year from http://www.kingswaycanada.com, this is our official dealer in Toronto. With the Official guidance of Frank Rush of Tiffen in New York. He's a pretty nice guy. Am I full of BS? NO! But I can lie with the best of them when I want to! What do I do? I am a creative Indie Producer. Where did I get my training? Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. (S.A.I.T.) and Ryerson University. If your not familiar with either of them Google em. What camera's have I shot with? Sony Betacam SP, Sony V5000, Canon Xl1, Canon XL2, IMAX. YES IMAX, but not on a rig. What rig have I primarily used? The original Cinema Products EFP. Since moving to the lighter DVs I am now moving to a lighter, newer rig as mentioned above. I was inspired by Garrett Brown in the early 80s when I saw him operating a rig on TV. The image has been in my mind ever since. I belong to a host of forums, www.mbcanada.com a Mercedes enthusiast forum from Canada. I co-own and operate www.lightages.ca, a forum dedicated to Canadian Photographers. Warren Miller's ski films have inspired me to give skiing and rig work a serious go once I have my lighter rig. Why did I post all this info about myself? Because some of you old coots would probably lambaste me with ingenious semantics designed to inflame my sensibilities. I might be an ugly mother, but that doesn't mean I don't have some serious gray matter in my peanut. I find inspiration in music and like to use my PDA IPAQ to listen to MP3s while flying a cam around. I pirate music off the web relentlessly. I post with Discreet Combustion, After Effects and Photoshop. I'm heavily invested in Canon Glass and gear. I use the Panasonic AJ-D250 DVCPro deck with the firewire option to capture to my editing machine. I am a PC user no Macs for me thank you. I don't buy computers off the shelf, I build my own using Asus motherboards and Antec cases. Yes I still have my old 3/4" linear editing decks, the Old Sony U-Matics. Your forum does not have a section for introductions, so here it is. This is me like it or not. I'm actually a pretty nice guy and easy to get along with. I don't like power struggles, confrontations, or nasty people! The web is full of resources so I do my own research and don't necessarily accept a response as the final authority on antyhing until I have done the research for myself. IanMcMillan
Dear Matt, Piracy is one reason Producers can't pay like they could. We have saying in OZ that works around the world, Pull your head in. All the best Macca
Matt Sanderson
Dear Ian: Thats true, to a larger extent in the World of Television Production. Although with movie pirating of motion pictures through downloads the problem is becoming pandemic at an alarming rate. The licensing deals are becoming more difficult to achieve because producers want more money for broadcast licenses. With the advent of DVD replication technology being so freely available on desktop computers the ease with which DVD's can be copied is also unkind to the industry. The next step in protection technology for distribution is just around the corner. With the reduction in size of storage media and it's increased capacity it's only a matter of time before movies and music CDs are stored on hard media with new thumbnail sized players replacing full sized DVD and VHS players. By linking directly to digital television ports this will rule out the immediate possibility of direct to tape duplication and direct to drive replication. There is also the issue of producers becoming greedier and inflating above the line premiums for themselves as well. It's all relative and it's begun a trend towards an out of control pricing spiral which could cause a recession in production revenues within a few years. Cheers Mate. Matt Sanderson
Hey Matt :D , I've noticed that there are many Matt's on this board. If enough of us show up here we will have enough Matts to cover an entire studio floor :) I think it would be great to hook up and have coffee with all the Toronto based rig workers here! Cheers.
