Moderators Louis Puli SOC Posted September 27, 2006 Moderators Report Share Posted September 27, 2006 Hi everyone I was on a shoot yesterday where we had 2 x 16mm cameras anArri SR 3 (Main unit) and a Arri SR2 for Steadicam .I had a problem with my Preston digital 2 which I had not come across before and would like to share with you all . For some reason the Camera Run function would not work on the SR2 from the Preston ?? (blue 11-pinSR2 to the MDR2 ) I was at the time powering the Preston form my Pro sled using 12volts We did power it with 24 volts as well but no go . We even Hard wired the system and again no go.? It wasn’t a problem on Steadicam as I had my assistant just button By hand for me but when went to go on the hot head I had a quiet word to the dp and the SR3 was used and the Preston worked fine . After returning to the rental house I recreated the problem with there Prestons as well And they had the same problem . I also tried an Arri 3 and a 35BL (35mm) and all Prestons worked fine. Whats with the Arri SR 2 and the Preston . Thank Louis Puli from down under B)
Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted September 27, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 27, 2006 Well, one thing different between SR2 and SR3 is that the first one needs a permanent contact switch on the 11-pin, or if you own one of those 4-pin hand-held handle wires. The SR3 has the more modern 3-pin, momentary switch. Keep in mind that on some camera's (like modern 435/arricam) the 11-pin only supplies 12 volt and has no start-stop wiring. But that was not your problem i think. As a restless DIY and stingy person I have once bought my preston set with only one blue Camera-run cable/connector. Then with the famous 9-pin D-type computer connectors i have made extension cables to all other brands and types. What I found with the SR2 and Arri 3 that some camera's are wired different then others and as the Preston has not a real switch but a electronic switch, it matters which pin is + and minus. So i had to make a switch in the D-type connector to reverse polarity, or it would run wild or not start at all with some camera's. This could be your problem too. Chip Monk
On SR2's, the left most 11 pin port may just be wired for 12v only, but usually the middle port is an original and should be wired for everything.
Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted September 28, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 28, 2006 <_< Cant remember an SR2 with 2 11-pin connectors......... I did see splitters: a little box with 2 exits. Some electronic bases from the Arri 3 have 2 11-pin connectors though. and yes, sometimes one works and the other doesn't..... Some have chosen to do this because of the addition of video taps, and CE speed controls. The original port was for a speed control, I believe, but with an upgrade from CE, you dont need this. CE also makes the bases for Arri 3's. Splitter boxes also may not work, depending if the manufacturer spent the time to wire all the ports. NINER boxes are wired for all used pins, so you can use them for power and start/stop.
