Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted August 4, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 4, 2004 Since we've had such a serious couple of months for guild activiites, fighting to get someones sled back (Steve are you there?) and some major fighting and bickering amongst ourselves, I thought it might be a good idea to have a Steadicam Guild gathering "fun night" or "fun day" There is a place in the Universal City Walk called Jillian's. They have Food, beverages and Bowling. I'm not much of a bowling fan but my wife's co-workers decided to get together there last night and I went along. I actually had fun. (I haven't been bowling in.. well, a long time) If I make a reservation of a party of 10 or more we can get the "VIP Party" The VIP party consists of: 2 hours of Free Bowling free shoes A starter tray of Chips and Salsa A tray of Vegetables and Dill Dip and a starter tray of Jillian's Two Alarm Wings. Parking is $8 Alcohol, Beverages, tax and gratuities are NOT included. (The VIP party value is approximately $350) The downside is that these VIP parties are from Sunday through Wednesday only. I have the Gathering listed for Saturday August 21 on the Guild web site but If we want the VIP party, it would have to be between the 22nd and the 25th. Of course I have to see if there is room for us there on whatever day we choose. How does Sunday the 22nd work for you all? It could be in the afternoon or evening. Cast your vote here on the forum for the date AND time and I'll see about making a reservation Jillian's web site: http://www.jillians.com/club_detail.asp?club_id=
chupap
Just as a thought, David...I personally despite the Citywalk; crowded, noisy, and obnoxious is how I frankly feel about it, and $8 for parking is the final dealbreaker. It seems to me that there are many places in this big city that you can drive right up to and not have to hassle through the crowds. If bowling is the theme, the fairly new Lucky Strikes bar/restaurant at Hollywood & Highland may be worth looking at. It's a really nice room, not a sports bar, they have a number of lanes at the back and they have the neon from the sadly departed Hollywood Star Lanes (as well as the bartop being made from one of the old lanes), which is a nice nostalgic touch. Now, it's not that I'm a fan of Hollywood & Highland either, but the entrance to this is right off the street, so you can avoid the tourists there also. Bowling is a good idea, look forward to seeing it come together. Best, Chas
Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted August 5, 2004 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted August 5, 2004 Thanks for the suggestion Charles! I totally understand how you feel. I hate paying for parking too! (That's why I love burbank... free parking) I said that to my wife that night but she said, well, we are getting 2 hours of free bowling/shoes and free chips/salsa/vege platter and wings. The free bowling makes up for the cost of parking. We went on a Tuesday and it wasn't that crowded. The bowling is off to the right from the entrance from the parking ramp. So it's close. Now, I don't know what a Sunday would be like. I'm assuming that it's slow for them since they are offering free food and free bowling. There is also a bowling alley in Burbank near Glendale. It's close to the park. It looked like a big place with lots of free parking and no tourists. :) I've never been there. As a matter of fact Tuesday was the first time I've bowled since I moved here 4 years ago. If you guys want to go to a different place that's ok with me too. I'm easy.:)
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted August 5, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 5, 2004 True enough, the bowling alley in Burbank is pretty good. I was just thinking the atmosphere at the spot in Hollywood might be a bit more groovy for those who aren't bowling. And by "atmosphere" I mean "scenery"...and by "scenery" I mean "eye candy"...hope you are all following me on this...
Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted August 5, 2004 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted August 5, 2004 Well, if no one has any objections why don't we just plan on Lucky Strikes. Should we make it for Saturday the 21st then? What time? We can see what kind of turn out we have, then if we want we can try one of the other places the next time around? Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted August 17, 2004 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted August 17, 2004 I checked out Lucky Strikes and parking is, um... $6. ouch. There is a bowling alley in Burbank called Pickwick. I'm fairly certain that the parking is Free. (It is Burbank afterall) So if no one has any objections lets plan on meeting at Pickwick at say, 6:30 or 7pm this Saturday, August 21 Pickwick website Pickwick Bowl 921 Riverside Drive, Burbank, CA 91506 818 842-7188 Driving Directions
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted August 17, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 17, 2004 Pickwick Lanes is a good choice, David. I think you'll enjoy it. I've been there a few times celebrating Dave Chameides' birthday (who recently became a dad for the second time, if anyone wishes to shoot him a congrats!) In the interest of disclosure, I was just at a bowling party at Lucky Strikes, and they validate for the Hollywood & Highland parking garage: $2 for 4 hours. However, the bowling rates are pretty high (it's the babe-factor surcharge, I think!)
TonyMagaletta
I know this may be a foolish question? Is this just for sled owners or can one who admires sleds come out to play?
