Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted August 20, 2012 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted August 20, 2012 price is estimated at $7K for the transmitter, designated receiver will follow later this year...it looks like it will transmitt over-the-air-HD, just like your local TV station...meaning a modern digital TV tuner should be able to receive it.. Premium Members William Demeritt Posted August 20, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 20, 2012 Wow, it broadcasts ATSC? That would be fantastic if true! Any rumors on the range, or do we have to wait?
Premium Members Andrew Ansnick Posted August 20, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 20, 2012 Alright, now we are getting somewhere! But the price is way too high still. Assuming it's Canatrans sized- cut the price in half and include a receiver, then they might be on to something.
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted August 20, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 20, 2012 I don't know if "cut the price in half" is feasible, but I will say ATSC broadcast opens up the consumer market for use as monitors. Likewise, ATSC broadcast will allow for multicast out of the box: power up the transmitter, and any number of receivers will get the signal. Depending on the range, the 42" HDTV in the honeywagon could show a live feed from camera. Small, portable handheld HDTV's that received ATSC for the director, multiple monitors in village. Just as the Modulus and Canatrans once made use of over-the-air broadcast that was received by anything in the spectrum, so too would this open up a lot of great opportunities. We'll see what price they're actually thinking, but it'll definitely make things interesting!
Premium Members Bryan Trieb Posted August 20, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 20, 2012 I believe the unit is FCC approved. Bry
Premium Members Peter Sheppard Posted August 21, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 21, 2012 Could you just use an HD Set-Top box as the receiver and plug it into any monitor?
Premium Members Twojay Dhillon Posted August 21, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 21, 2012 This definitely has peaked my interest.
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted August 21, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 21, 2012 Could you just use an HD Set-Top box as the receiver and plug it into any monitor? I believe, if I'm getting this correctly, you should be able to use any device with an ATSC tuner for monitoring purposes. Newer HDTV's have built in ATSC tuners, so all you'd need is an antenna. Premium Members Thomas English Posted August 21, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 21, 2012 Surely the Canatrans SD and Modulus never had FCC approval? Its not legal to open your own mini pirate TV station is it... Except maybe on the Arctic. I'd buy one in an instant and it sounds like it might have some longevity as well. $7000 seems high but yeah... I'd have one. The DigiTV signal is certainly a LOT less forgiving than Standard Def analogue. So I wonder how this will work out. We can have any array of set top box's and Antenna arrays all off the shelf consumer stuff so I am very excited. I wonder what the differences between European and US systems will be. Premium Members Lawrence Karman Posted August 21, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 21, 2012 Studios might get wiggy about transmitting content on a frequency anybody with a consumer tuner could pick up, a non-dedicated receiver. They already freak out about cell phone cameras on set. Modulus and Canatrans range was not too far and that's why we got away with it. If this is much stronger (and it needs to be) it could be problematic and potentially banned by the studios.
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted August 21, 2012 Moderators Report Share Posted August 21, 2012 I'd add to Lawrence's words, it's an HD image too. Think about it, anyone could capture and HD image of your footage. That said, I'm very interested to learn the details
Premium Members Thomas English Posted August 23, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 23, 2012 Lets face it. In my experience of HD signals as a whole on BNC cables and especially HD transmitters/receivers. Its not going to travel far. Unless you have a massive Yagi pointing straight at it.
