NOT Simon Blouin
Hey guys, I was watching this videoclip yesterday (Mackelmore - Can't hold us), and it seems like something happened on the operating in one scene. I was just wondering as a new operator, what happened..? Too heavy, arm problem..? You can see it at 3:38. Cheers!
Evrim KAYA
Hello Simon, This is a vibration problem. nothing to do with the arm. Probably one or several components of the rig -including the camera itself- is loose, causing vibration as the operator walks around. Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted May 17, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 17, 2013 or simply someone bumped into the sled and the editor decided to keep the one bad take...
Evrim KAYA
i don't think so victor. the problem is coming and going all throughout that scene . A bump would have a much bigger but also shorter effect on the image.
Premium Members Joe Lawry Posted May 17, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 17, 2013 The rig is a very old 3a.. half that video was shot in NZ.. but it wasn't me.
NOT Simon Blouin
Okay.. That's pretty weird they decided to keep those takes beacause other than that, the clip looks good...

Premium Members Martin Stacey Posted May 18, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 18, 2013 There were two rigs used on this. An old 3a for most of it and a MK-V Nexus with gyros soft mounted from the side door of a van for the rest. I think the operator said that they used Reds when he returned my Nexus and gyro set. Premium Members Bradley Crosbie Posted May 24, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 24, 2013 My two cents. The vibration occurs as the camera changes direction from backing away to tracking left. A move that require the arm to return to the centre of balance, then extend out again to the left. The shot is low-mode and if the plate was mounted to an epic carry handle, any arm/rig vibrations would be amplified. If gyros were being used to fight the wind, and they wanted to fight against the direction change, that could have created flex/vibrations that were amplified by the time they reached the lens. Premium Members Martin Stacey Posted May 24, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 24, 2013 Gyros were only used for the tracking shots of the trailer. Everything else was on a 3A
Premium Members Tim Fabrizio Posted August 11, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 11, 2013 Focus motor may have jumped on and off the gears? Horizon seems to hold so don't think the rig itself was bumped.
Premium Members Alfeo Dixon SOC Posted August 11, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 11, 2013 Its only in one setup on the beach sequences which leads to believe something is loose in the setup and not the rig. possibly even a lens that was not properly seated or sub standard support used within the setup. I had a B4 mounted lens on a Live-to-Tape show that kept seeing vibrations on the jumbos and went thru my entire setup only to find out the utility handed me a camera with the lens not seated properly... very frustrating if you don't know to look there first. Of course the Reds/Epics are PL Mounts, but this could still happen in a rush.
