I put mine in the case as much as possible, then I don't have to worry about it. Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted August 9, 2009 Moderators Report Share Posted August 9, 2009 Sled goes into a Modular 51 Sled Sock and then placed on a foam bed on a shelf in truck. Bungee cord over it prevents sliding off. The Sock is slightly oversized so I can leave the post out a few inches, MDR2 attached, and monitor and batteries wherever they like to be for the given camera (to go into my hard case, everything must be sucked in, etc). Works well assuming you have a real camera truck. Just spent all week on a commercial with an unbuilt cube truck. For these jobs, the hard case is still needed! Most of time, I lay my sled flat on the back seat with some pillows, secured with a sand bag on top of the center of the post. Vest is next to it. Arm is on the floor with a sand bag on top. For a short distance and when time is gold (sunset and sun rise shot) my assistant will hold the full balanced-camera-sled vertically on the back seat. Stand is ready, stand securely by the sand bags on the truck bed. Cases are used mainly from home to location; then location back home at the end of the day. Foam beds, cases or ??? Jens My rig rides in a foam bed on the camera truck for any truck moves. been doing that for several years without a problem. I think they ride it in the cab of the truck between the driver and the AC riding shot gun. When I got my first rig going on 12 years ago, I was super carefull with it. I was the only one that could build it, I kept it in my house, I put everything away just so............. Now I seem to try to do everything I can not to deal with it. At rap on a one day shoot, I generally throw everyting in the back of my SUV and haul ass with almost no regard for the gear. If you think about it, it's basically a hunk of aluminum with some wires running down it. On a show, it just goes in it's case which I had made big enough that it can just drop in fully built (less the camera) and away it goes. I haven't seen the need to cover it (i.e. put it in a sock) when it's on the foam, not like things are floating around inside the truck and I think it's less likely that anyone would throw anything on top of it when they can see it's a Steadicam sitting there. It gets bungied down to keep from flying off if they pop a wheelie on the truck or something. This is all what I think happens, I never actually see it! I only added the sled sock when I bought it for dayplaing as it seemed like a good idea and then I owned it anyway (ultimately not really necessary). Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted August 11, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 11, 2009 Two of the slickest setups I've seen for this were Steve Fracol's upright "Coffin" bolted to the wire cage in his van and also Lynn Nicholson's Chevy Suburban. Lynn had a giant drawer built full-width into the back of the Sub so all he ever did was open the cargo doors, slide the drawer out and lay the rig down built, sans camera of course. Mine usually goes in the back seat of my truck or on foam in the camera truck when we have that luxury. Neither seem very safe to me but so far so good. Premium Members Jason Torbitt Posted August 12, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 12, 2009 Slightly off-topic, but in my own van I just ramp my Magliner up into the side compartment of my VW, ratchet strap it in and leave the sled docked (I usually bungee cord round it for safety too) It's a life saver for multiple locations, and it's great to whip out a fully-built rig in no time at all.
