I saw and flew the new Sachtler sled at the NAB. Liked it a lot.

here are some key features:

1.8" carbon fiber outer post

1.5" keyed! aluminum inner post

new bigger gimbal for 1.8" post

vz adjustment at bottom of outer post, moves the inner post in & out, for drop-time adjustment. nice

hd-sdi wiring and power up to 360! watts through the post, for those hungry cameras. 96% of power makes it from the battery to the top-stage.

flexible battery configuration, 1,2,or 3 batteries, for/aft, up/down of batteries. hot swap feature

will try to get some pictures

1.8" gimbal is odd Yes it will be stiffer than a 1.5 or 1.58" post but why not go to 2" and get the full benefit

i think the idea behind the 1.8" outer post is that the inner post is a full 1.5", so that you can still use your monitor bracket, gyro mount, etc

I demo'd the sled in November and really liked a lot of the features. I didn't like the square gimbal, not compatible with my stuff. HD monitors can be picky about the signal going through the sled connectors. The Marshall 3gHDSDI would not consistantly accept the internal HDSDI signal. Everything else is well engineered.

i don't think that this prototype was available in november. It is their latest development. the gimbal handle is now round. see picture above.

also in regards to HD-SDI: it's all about the signal quality. the sachtler sled is certified for HD-SDI, the german television is using it for years for that. if you have a bad signal quality, let's say coming from the RED camera (0.5V & unstable) you can only get so much out on the other end, if you then have a sensitive monitor, you encounter issues. don't blame the messenger aka sled cable.......
