My Steadicam Mini's monitor was damaged on a flight cross country so I'm looking for anyone who has a mini they can part out for the monitor OR a third party monitor idea that would work with the mini in as far as mounting AND the 4 pin connector. Thanks.

Hey Kurt! Sorry your having such a hard time. I recommended this site to you because my experience has been that most of the people here are pretty cool and generally they have answers to pretty much any steadicam related question you could have.

Don't worry about the a$$hole attitude you got about not using your exact name. While I agree it is nice to use your name so everybody knows who they are talking to, the way we go about telling people that they used the wrong name is sometimes ridiculous. I know it is in the forum guidelines (as I just read them for the first time) but at least half of the people that register don't read those rules. Some of those people get a friendly reminder to change their screen name to their actual name (like I did when I used something else) and some of them get the screen name Nazi 'reminder'. The one that attempts to make you feel like some kind of fool for not reading the stupid forum guildelines. I'm a member of at least 50 on line forums and I have never read the forum rules on a single one. That includes the forum I was the lead administrator for 5 years. A forum that was easily a thousand times larger and more active.

I'm also sorry that your getting the 'My rig is a big boy rig and your little baby rig is so small I don't have time to think about it' attitude. I'm sure you will find that the large majority of the people on this site are super cool and don't have that kind of attitude. Just a few people that feel the need to talk about how great they are. Those people should probably realize that with the advent of the super high quality - super small size camera, the smaller steadicam's are an ever increasing part of the steadicam market. Some of those 'big boy' operators with their 'big boy' rigs might find they start loosing work to solid operators like yourself with smaller rigs and cameras that they don't have to charge a metric fcuk ton of money to rent because they didn't need a second mortgage on their house to pay for.

Anyway, I'm very happy with my Boland monitor but I'm pretty sure that even their smallest monitor is too big and too expensive to be a good candidate to replace your monitor on your mini. I know Terry West can make any cable you could need so whatever monitor you end up with, I'm sure he can make the correct cables to make it work on your sled. Hopefully somebody on the site can give you some help full information about some monitor options.

Good luck,

Kurt,

The mini sled is similar but not identical to first and second generation Flyers. Do you know if your monitor connector is the same as the Flyer monitor? If so, then the stock standard-def Flyer monitor is a pretty good choice (500nits and a decent anti-glare coating, but no match for direct sun, of course.)

Another option might be Glidecam's L7 monitor, which appears to be a version of the Flyer monitor (though who knows, the anti-glare coating may be different). Not sure about the connector, though...

You might also look at Lilliput monitors if you are very budget-conscious. No personal experience with those, but supposedly they perform well for consumer-grade LCDs, and have good specs.

As for the connectors, if it were me I'd go ahead and have someone wire up new connectors on the sled. If you ever sold the rig, that would probably be considered a benefit.

The Mini doesn't get much love, because it doesn't have an standard, adjustable socket block and it has an arm that is very limited compared to its successor, the Flyer. The Flyer arm was a huge step forward, introducing technology that was incorporated into all of Tiffen's G-series arms. If you haven't tried a Flyer yet, do it, it will rock your world!

Peter Abraham at Tiffen may be a great help to you. Micheal Craigs at the factory may be able to help you also.

Regarding negative energy that you may be getting from some quarters, try to shake it off. Mike's reply pretty much sums up my experience. I looked at your website and you seem like a hardworking, dedicated and passionate operator. Wishing you great success in your career. Hope you are able to get your monitor problem sorted out quickly!

Kurt,

Sorry to hear you had problems - I try to at least glance at every post that comes through the forum but this gets a little daunting considering I am a working operator with a life! Anyway, not sure what Mike is referring to.

A believe that indeed a Flyer monitor will work on a Mini. Call Peter Abraham as was suggested. He is a noble man and will help you out.

Cheers.

Just wanted to mention that i had found Kurt's his website ages & ages (2002/2003) ago and it was at that point i understood that using a Steadicam for weddings is a cool feature, so thank you Kurt for that !!!

Good luck on your monitor..
