Macs and Video Monitoring

hey people

 

so i was sitting around tonight trying to think of another way to get video to something else besides a monitor with some sort of tuner hooked up to it, mod quad or whatever. and was thinking it would be great to have some way to get a tuner onto a laptop or ipad or something. started poking around online and found this thing -

thinking that could we use this on a laptop, hook a yagi or sharkfin up to it and tune into our channel from a modulus or a vtx or canatrans.

 

not sure how strong the signal would be but would love to hear thoughts on if it would be worth trying. cant be worse than some of those handheld tuner lcd's i imagine.

 

obviously a laptop is way more money than a tuner and monitor but was thinking if we got in a bind, we could have the software, give it to someone with a laptop and the usb dongle and have a nice easy backup considering laptops are all over. or on an ipad maybe. maybe they could even record a feed onto the computer or something if they wanted. plus it is a small portable, usb powered tuner.

 

thoughts would be good. anyone tried this?

Nothing like creating a problem where none exists.

 

you could just use a sub $100 monitor that if dropped no one would care about.

i have a couple sub 100 buc monitors, but was on a shoot and everyone was dinking around with their laptops and ipads and thought, if they just had a tuner on it, they could watch this stuff and do whatever they do when they should be watching shots. just wondering if anyone has tried a USB tuner with a laptop as an option, for specific situations, not for everyday use.

The tuners start at $120 then you need an antenna, The laptop isn't really the correct tool for the job, a TV monitor is.

It seems like one of the cool things one could do is record the video directly onto the laptop - and have easy access to files later, easy edits, etc.

 

For the cost of a backup cable (or less!), I think it's worth trying out, and could be useful in certain situations.

Funny enough we have been using an Itv capture card on a f35 show. it works great off of the RF , but the direct signal form the on board downconvertor or the decimater does not register . the signal form the tap on our 435 arri works fine. what is it about downconverted signals that drives some video nuts. I used to notice occasional issues with downconverted signals and my TB-6 , neccessitating additional termination to get the signal to be stable.

You could always use another of their products, this thing

then EVERYone can watch the live video over wifi and 3g on their favorite Apple device

of course you'd probably need like 11 pounds of converter shit attached to the camera, but you're paying for convenience

I just went out and bought the eyeTV hybrid for the heck of it, and it works to record off the air, either HDTV or old style (as well as encoding videos, which I did not test).

 

Files need to be converted to be used elsewhere, but they can be played back in eyeTV.

 

Quality is okay, and it's amusing for those on the laptops to see what you are sending. Converting the files at a high resolution takes a lot of time, however.
