(I ship cheap US mail, few dollars to send.) Connecticut office and I mark the package "batteries for recycling". I do that occassionally with dead/dying ones I have. Also if you are buying a new battery they will take an old battery in for some kind of discount. (Not on "B" stock batts because you already get a deal on those.)
