Hi Folks!

I'm interesting to know what are the most important differences between the best Marell Monitor (HBM-5M) and the TB-6. Aside the price, of course! Then... Why this so different "canyon" prices??? Marell ($ 3.000) with few less options than TB-6 ($ 14.000)

What do you think? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have both the monitors you mentioned -- we all know the tb-6 is fabulous so I'll only talk about the Marell here. I bought mine back in the day when there were few choices for a steadicam monitor, let alone a "green screen". There was the pro, the tb-6, the croziel and that was about it. When this came out it was a steal at $2500 to $3k. Now, not so much. I'd look at some of the lcd's out today such as the marshall or nebtek, they are both about the same cost or less.

I use the Marell sometimes to save wear and tear on the tb-6, it's also about a pound lighter (4.5 lbs) and uses a bit less power. It has a lot of good features similar to the tb-6 -- framelines, image flip/reverse/squeeze, crosshair. But, it is not a daylight viewable monitor, I don't care what the manufacturer and other owners say. It cannot hold a candle to the tb-6 (or the better lcd's we have tested) as far as brightness, sharpness or build quality, however it's a great back up monitor. It balances nicely and is just fine for interiors and some exteriors (no sun!!). I have had very few issues with mine (except daylight viewability) in the years I've had it.

Hi Ron! Thanks for you precius reply. So... The only 2 differences it's the daylight viewability and the zoom option (missing on the marell) It's so important this option??? Anyway... Marell sells a hoodsun for the first problem... Can this resolve the problem???

I think I'll buy a Marell, then, if the works goes well, I'll can buy the TB-6!

I added to your quote.

yes, the zoom option on the tb-6 is nice but the real difference is the fact that you can see it in direct sun (which as an operator, actually seeing an image to compose might be considered important). You will barely see an image on the marell in the daylight, even with the hood (I have that too). Like I said, it's a good back-up monitor but since you are on a budget I'd probably rather go with a marshall or nebtek lcd and have a better quality picture that you might actually be able to see outside. It's odd for me to say that being a die-hard tube/greenscreen guy but 10 yrs ago it was one of the only options, today there are other options available for the same or less $$ that might be better in the long run (especially if you shoot hd).

Ron, which LCD HD, visible in sunlight, Monitor advide to me? There are so many Monitors on the market: MK-V Hummingbird, TRANSVIDEO Cinemonitor, Marshall, or Nebtek???

MK-V are HD??? I don't remember.... In my opinion the Cinemonitor by Transvideo would be the best solution... I don't know nothing about the Marshall or Nebtek (used on the new photo by Pro Gpi about the new HD sled.

Yes, other thing it's the dynamic balance... I own a Pro update sled, so, I think would be better for me a CRT Monitor or an LCD Monitor with telescopic monitor arm and a battery mount...

Don't you?

yes you will need to get more weight onto a lighter weight monitor (battery) and/or move it farther out. No the marell is not hd. I said if you shoot hd (being so prevalent today I'd say this is a good chance) the marshall or nebtek might be a better choice. The cinemonitor3 is also an excellent choice.

You should start doing some reading and look at the pictures from the monitor shootout if you haven't already:

also talk to as many ops as possible to get their point of view. Everyone has different opinions and priorities. I like to see a picture in the daylight. Some might deem other features more important.

The TB-6 is sold as a fulltime monitor as the Marell is advertised and sold as a "Backup Monitor".

I was just on there website... They are getting kackie... they dropped the 'Back Up" and are advertising as: "This monitor sets itself apart in terms of value. When compared side by side other leading steadicam monitors the deviation in performance is insignificant, yet the difference in price is astonishing."

I will contest that.... You still get what you pay for... always have , always will.

I worked twice with a Marell... My PRO had gone to Monitor Heaven and I couldn't get a replacement quick enough... and twice it were extremes, yes but still... One was high noon Griffith Park chasing Jason Statham around... could only see a sun ball in my screen... the other 2 days later.... Spaceship set lit to a 2 stop.... lowmode following a black cable on a black floor and ending on a face... both times I couldn't see sh##! and both times I was not called back...

You have a 14'000 Volt Power supply in the TB-6 (18'000 in the PRO) and 4500 Volt in the Marell... it's a good monitor but "insignificant performance difference" ? Don't think so...

I'll stick with my two TB-6's... thank you very much...

Erwin
