L.A. steadicam review/practice courses?

Does anyone know of any upcoming one or 2-day Los Angeles area 2010 steadicam review (dynamic balancing, etc.) and hands-on practice courses on rigs for cameras weighing 25 pounds or more? I am not a beginner but not a lot of experience. Don't own a rig yet. Just need time on one to brush up. I know Tiffen has one upcoming for pro-sumer camera rigs. That is useless to me. If you know of such an opportunity, please email me at camera.DP@verizon.net or call me at 310-710-5068 after 9AM. I'm 6', 195 lbs, hold the post with my right hand.

Thanks,

Bill Woodbridge in Westwood

I disagree completely. Though I don't blame you for looking for something else. lift capacity of the rig doesn't change physics. All the same of which apply to big rigs and small rigs.

Other than setting up a one on one with Robert Starling (who is in Vegas) I don't know of anything else that would fit the bill. I would trust Starling with mylife, my wife, and everything in-between.

Well, my hypothetical wife.

ETA: Just occurred to me that you would need a rig for Starling's workshop

The Tiffen Steadicam® Workshops will, of course, be coming back to Los Angeles. Likely in the dead of winter.

Our esteemed colleague is entirely correct. The operational form, physics, aesthetics of Steadicam operating are applied across the board. You do the same things with your brain, hands, feet and body whether the rig flies 16 pounds or 56 pounds. ( Of course, your feet will be a bit more tired with the latter than the former ).

Keep an eye on our Steadicam Workshops web site for the latest schedule.

Best to all,

Actually I get where the original poster is coming from...while the basics are the same, all the inertia and grip and balance/cg stuff is scaled way up in the big rigs. When I took the Workshop last year it took me a bit to adjust my Flyer muscle-memory to the significantly-higher forces needed to start, stop, pan and tilt a big rig.

A violin and double-bass are both stringed instruments, but the physicality and skillsets needed to master one or the other--though closely related--are not identical.
