Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted August 12, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 12, 2011 Looking for a screw-in lightweight Sony camera plate (don't need quick release,it's about weight). Something like the MK-V or GLD plate....with holes for motor rods. email or pm me if you have something...thanks! mark (at) sunporchmedia (dot) com

Brad Smith
I've got one of these, GLD rock solid and light. I'd check and see about availability, i've got a newer design than what is shown.
Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted September 12, 2011 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted September 12, 2011 Rob, Thanks but I have a Zephyr so that's not gonna work for me. I need something to screw into my existing narrow dovetail, rather than replace it. Well, if someone made one to replace the narrow Archer-style Zephyr dovetail I'd certainly be interested, but... I'm looking primarily for the lightest weight plate (with dual 15mm motor rods) I can find, willing to sacrifice quick-release. GLD in Australia has one. No weight specs, so don't know how much I'm gaining. MK-V advertises onebut is out of stock and I'm not keen to send money in advance. The design does look good, though. Hoping to find used but willing to consider new if someone has a solid lead...

Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted September 13, 2011 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted September 13, 2011 Job, Thanks. I will contact you in a couple of days. I've been reading about your 3D job, get some rest! Do you have the motor rods, too...or do you know if the holes are compatible with the PRO 15mm rods? Thomas, thank you for the link to the Baer-bel plate. I was aware of it but didn't realize how light it is. Hope you are doing well, my friend! Andrew Stone
Mark, Have you looked at the Cam-Tec site. There is the "French Shorty" and variations on it. -Andrew
Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted September 14, 2011 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted September 14, 2011 Andrew, Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, The problem with the French Shorty (as well as the Baer-Bel V-lock plate, it turns out...and every other direct dovetail replacement I've found) is that they appear to be for a standard-width dovetail. At least I believe that is the case. The Zephyr uses a narrower dovetail that is the same as the Flyer (and I think the Archer and maybe the Clipper??). So, the only products that I've found that would work for me are the MK-V plate and the GLD plate, both of which screw into an existing dovetail. I already have a Sony V-lock plate with motor rods, but it's a couple of pounds that I'd like to shed. Mark, Have you looked at the Cam-Tec site. Premium Members Osvaldo Silvera SOC Posted October 1, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 1, 2011 Mark, I recently took my Sony plate to a Hot Rod buddy who has a Mill and He milled off a deep channel on both sides, and 4 shorter channels on the bottom to drop a few ounces. I'm going to compare weight of mine and another Sony plate in the next week to find out exactly what was dropped, but I would think it's at least 4-5 ounces. And the cost....$20, He said $10, I gave $20 and left happy, PS, He also milled off 2 channels on my Ikegami plate. Just some info for you. I didn't want to spend $800 US plus shipping to save 16 ounces. Ozzie
Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted October 1, 2011 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted October 1, 2011 Ozzie, Love to hear the results. With the Zephyr, ounces count....but dollars count, too!
Premium Members Osvaldo Silvera SOC Posted October 3, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 3, 2011 Well Mark, I think I need to take those plates to a machine shop again. Here are some of the weights. The Ikegami weighed 21 ounces befre and 20 ounces afterwards. Not too much, but oh well. I think I can take another ounce off it but just have to make the time to look at it closely. On the Sony plate VT-14, you'll have to help me out on this one. I only have mine to weigh and it's 24 ounces as it stands. If you can weigh yours or a newer syle VT-14 we should know the difference. There is a bit of room to remove some more aluminum from the Sony plate. So that one can drop maybe another ounce. quote name='Mark Schlicher SOC' timestamp='1317443463' post='69674'] Ozzie, Love to hear the results.
