CharlesEdmond
I saw some fantastic operating on tonights American Idol during the Vegas rounds. Does anyone know what kind of zoom/focus control John Perry uses? His control of the lens's focal length within a move is amazing, which is one thing i'm trying to work on. I've tried the gimbal mounted G-zoom but it's hard to hold my index finger on the focus knob for any length of time because it's too far from the zoom rocker and my hand cramps up. Are there any other zoom/focus options for live tv guys? CE

Premium Members John Perry SOC Posted February 18, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 18, 2012 Thanks Charles, yes I use the Stanton zoom/focus handle for steadicam, however they do not manufacture them anymore so I don't know what else to recommend. I tried several other brands out there but I definitely prefer the Stanton handle over the others. It's also the most expensive at around $2000 each, but worth it. Maybe you could find a used one in the classifieds. I have 6 of them, and my oldest one is 14 years old with heavy use and still working with no problems. They are bullet proof, literally (don't ask how i know this). I did hear that Tiffen may consider making their version of Stantons handle, so people who need to buy a zoom/focus handle might call Tiffen to show your interest and see where they are with that item. It's definitely something that one of the manufacturers (whether its Tiffen, Pro, xcs) should step up and produce, especially since Stanton discontinued them. Premium Members William Demeritt Posted May 24, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 24, 2012 Peter Lehman is selling one: http://www.steadicamforum.com/index.php?showtopic=16064 I'd buy it but I can't afford it right now, so I'll rent Rob's spare!
