Rig is rusting! HELP.

I just worked blocks from the ocean for about 4 days. Parts of the arm, sled, and vest are showing rust. Anything I can do? I don't want it to keep rusting at the very least. 

I'm on my phone right now. I can post pictures when I get home.

Not terrible. Just surface rust.

 

A rag w some basic oil like 3-in-1 oil even wiped on the rusty parts will stop it and also take away any small amounts of salt residue

 

Q-tips w oil on them will get to the hidden Parts.

 

If nothing got in salt water it's just moisture / salt air.

 

That's a good start / final answer to the issue.

My arm has been in rain and gotten some surface run on various parts and that's all it too to stop it

The screws in my flyer rusted and went orange too, you can swap the screws for stainless, they wont rust but they will be shiny unless you get them plated.

Mcmaster Carr sell a rust preventive spray called T-9, we use it on the Libra head and it works well.

I don't like black oxide. If you even think about touching them, your hands get covered in black oxide.

We use stainless screws in everything we make and have them electroplated black for exactly that reason...

Ok, thank you everyone for the responses. I'd say that the crisis has been averted. However, just felt the gimbal, it's a little grimy feeling. It was much smoother before this. Before I go spraying WD40 (potentially making it worse), any recommendations?

wd-40 could work but there are better options.

 

1) could be such small particles that blowing out with air and just "grinding" up the small dirt with use will get rid of most of the issue.

 

2) call tiffen/peter abraham etc. see what they say.

 

3) usually its a drop or two of thin oil in the gimbal that does the trick.

 

4) see what others say but if its only salt air then probably smallest amounts of "dirt, sand, salt" got in.

The learning curve has been mildly stressful! But it's great to get in there and learn about this beautiful piece of machinery/design. I've been trying not to call or e-mail my contact (Derek Hester) at Tiffen. Don't want to annoy him too much : ) I'm thinking that it has to do with the salt issue that I have been having with my rig. Most of the surface rust is gone. I just don't want an even larger problem to be growing in the gimbal : /
