Site Sponsor John Ritter Posted March 24, 2012 Site Sponsor Report Share Posted March 24, 2012 I am curious as to the system/configurations being used for High power draw on cameras and Li-ion, Dionic 90/HC batteries, I have been dealing with a lot of battery life issues lately and find that the base cause Is the high power consumption with the newer digital camera configurations. For example: Alexa: 83-90 watts camera only Red One/MX: 75/80 watts camera only Red Epic/ Scarlet 60 watts Sony Cine Alta F35-F23/SRW9000 56 watts/57 watts Phantom Miro M310 65 watts Panasonic HPX 3700/2000 42/43 watts Now add a monitor between 18 to 28 watts Wireless transmitter: 28-36 watts Follow focus (drive when operating) 28-36 watts Zoom lens servo drive: 4-12 WATTS Total power requirement can top out at over 130 watts for a complete rig setup. A recent system quoted to me: Red MX fully rigged totaled out at 148 watts total power draw. Standard usage for all batteries is 50%-60% of rated capacity for long life, constant use at Full/maximum capacity drastically reduces the life expectancy for example A Dionic 90 will handle up to 50 watts, exceeding this will shorten the life drastically (overheating becomes a major issue). How does one handle these scenario’s? Even 2 Dionic 90 in series or parallel would be stressed How many of you come across a scenario like this? Premium Members Tomas Riuka Posted March 24, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 24, 2012 I just don't power camera from my own batteries :) cameras come from rental houses with batts, so why? 1.5 kg with Alexa won't change anything... Premium Members James Davis Posted March 24, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 24, 2012 (edited) For Red MX work everything from my sled to save a little bit of weight so I can get correct counter balance with my Archer 1. I have a second battery plate underneath so I just use their batteries (red brick v-locks) which are rated to 136w, so two of those are more than enough to power camera, camwave and a preston. With the Red Epic, I just use an on-board rail mounted v-lock as without it the length of the cameras mass is not ideal in my opinion and it behaves better with the extra weight. Panasonic/Sony 500/700 etc all those broadcast cameras are low enough current draw that I find two of my pag batteries underneath are more than capable of powering the camera and accessories, although those cameras are also light enough that I often just leave them with a v-lock battery attached to minimize downtime. It's rare that I do that much work with those cameras though, for me it's mostly Red One/MX, Red Epic and Sony F3. With my Rig when not running on Red MX I have a set of PAG 95 watt batteries, they seem to do the job and last ok. Haven't worked with the Phantom or the F35 yet and finally getting round to my first Alexa job in 2 weeks, so i'll let you know how that goes!
