Hello Everyone!

As part of Rig Engineering's re-structuring we are launching a new initiative.

We propose the creation of a rental program to provide arms for operators on a 2-year contract.

This new program can provide operators wanting an upgrade.

Secondly, those who need a back-up arm.

Third, those wishing to provide equipment for dry hires.

As there are a limited number of arms available, the customer-base will also need to be limited.

We would love to hear your opinions on the matter, so anything you would like to contribute please do so.

Kind Regards,

Hugo Langer,

Rig Engineering.

Yes, interesting idea but I'd like to hear the details. How much for the 2-year agreement? What if I want to rent it for less time or more time? Can I put rental already paid towards the purchase of the arm? Etc...

Hello Everyone!

Thank you for your interest.

The concept of hiring out on a long term basis we believe has never been done before in the steadicam industry.

Although we have already started testing a long-term hire on a 2-year contract basis with an operator (primarily as a beta-tester), we just wanted to float the idea on the forum before moving forward and expanding on the concept.

With regards to Dan and Daniel's queastions:

- Pricing hasn't been finalised yet but it is likely to be somewhere from $7.50 - $15/day.

- The contract will only be for a 2-year period, the timing is fixed.

- In regard to the hire-purchase proposal, this program is purely rental, no purchasing will be available as Rig Engineering will retain ownership of the rental arms.

- Daniel, in respect to your question, where abouts in Canada are you? As we have a number of options.

Kind Regards,

Hugo Langer

I do plan on upgrading my rig in the next year, so this is an interesting concept to me. Having said that, the price seems prohibitive. Correct me if I'm understanding this wrong, but at $15/day over the course of two years, that's $10,950 for a lease. It would make more sense to outright buy an Atlas arm for $12,000 (give or take depending on springs), and dry-hire a bigger arm if I ever need to go over 50 lb.

I like the idea.

It would be nice to have a purchase option at the end of the lease though, Many folks may think like Alan about the cost difference between renting this one for 2 years, paying almost $11K on the high side and not owning an arm. Maybe setting up a conventional Payment plan would work, It would probably have a lot of interested folks, but there would have to be some way of securing payment with back up credit cards, credit checks , etc..added interest, etc..

Not everyone who wants an arm has the funds to buy it in one payment, if you get a loan from a bank, what will the loan cost you with interest when your paid off?

A good idea definitely if folks could have a percentage of the lease be used towards the arm at lets say the current selling price of the arm, sort of a "Lease the arm for 2 years and XX% of your payments go towards the purchase price of $XXXXX when your done". And the Arm price is locked when you start your lease. Protecting current leases against possible price increases during the lease term.

A good idea, but risky for Steadyrig if the purchaser stops paying and doesn't return the arm., Not that it would happen, but Ya gotta try and think of everything.

PS. I've used this arm and it's very very nice, very smooth. and I have taken it completely apart and back together on the kitchen table, everything is made well, and the step by step instructions on the site are detailed and give you the confidence to take this on with no worries.

Ok, so we all agree that AU$15/day is to excessive.

As I mentioned the price would be somewhere between (AUS)$7.50 and $15 per day but this is still yet to be finalised as I have chosen to work with you all to settle on a price that satisfies operators as well as making financial sense for the company.

The intent of Steadyrig is to continue to provide high quality products and services to customers. We are therefore taking it upon ourselves to gradually get back-up/demo arms onto each continent, a service which would provide for operators in the instance of an arm being destroyed, damaged, lost or stolen etc. In order to provide this service Rig Engineering would rely on the support of rental customers for its success. The back-up arms would be provided at no additional cost (apart from shipping).

Thank you for your endorsements Osvaldo, much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Hugo

I will second what Ozzie says about the arm. Hugo spent a lot of time re-designing a good arm to be a great arm. It is user serviceable and is easy to take completely apart without losing an eye or digit. Once the kinks are worked out this will be a great way for new ops to get a hold of a real arm.

Since we have floated the concept of the rental program, we have been receiving quite a few emails with questions and queries. So I thought I might put some of the answers on the forum for you all.

One prime advantage of this program is that in most countries the rental charge is 100% tax deductible.

As Ron mentioned (thanks Ron for your coments by the way), another advantage is that operators who are just starting out can avoid outright purchase of an arm at great personal cost, which frees up money for purchasing other equipment such as sleds, vests, focus systems etc. (which can also be useful for established operators).

If you are already an established operator, and you are considering upgrading your arm, our arms could either be an upgrade solution or a stepping stone towards a more expensive arm.

In referance to shipping arrangements, the customer pays shipping costs and Rig Engineering will pay all import taxes, duties and clearance charges.

Kind Regards,

Hugo.

  • 3 months later...

Lease to own is an interesting idea...and I also agree, the day rate is definately on the high side. What if the arm needed servicing? How would that work out? Do you have Reps in the states that would help or would arms need to be shipped back down under.

I ask because I work for a tv/cable network and we fly 5-6 days a week...with the potential of an arm being used 8-10hrs a day. Maintenance and servicing are a big concern for us.
