building my 1st rig... what it should be my 1st follow focus ?

Hi guys ,

 

Im building my first rig ... Steadicam its been a art that it always captured my attention but never got the opportunity to actually get into it ...

 

The opportunity just arrived and im getting the zephyr ...i think its the best choice since my intetest is digital cinematography with Dslr , Red , and still do some ENG work with cameras like the XLH-1 ...

 

My first question is ...what do you guys suggest for a begginer follow focus ? ...

I would recommend either a Bartech or maybe Hocus Focus' new Axis 1 system. I have confidence in the HF unit, but I also know personally the Bartech is utterly bulletproof. If things don't work out, the investment will retain a lot of value and resale won't give you much of a problem. I would say go with something professional, supported and powerful so you can grow as an operator.

No personal experience with the Redrock, but I've heard mixed reviews at best. Most here would probably agree there is no such thing as a "beginner" follow focus. It's a piece of gear you must be able to rely on. Stick with tried and true. You can hardly go wrong with a used Bartech (analog or digital). If you can't afford at least a Bartech system, then you're better off renting on an as-needed basis. Also bear in mind that the AC, not you, will be operating the FF. An unfamiliar off-brand like the RR unit will not make for a happy AC.

 

The possible exception to the above is the new Axis 1 from Hocus Products. It's just coming to market, with good reviews from early testers. It seems to be designed and built extremely well. I believe it is roughly comparable in price to a new digital Bartech.

Thax Guys...Bartech was my first choice but the price made me look into others ... But againg u get what u pay for ...so i think i will bite the bullet and go with a industry standart ...i actually A.D with one two years ago and it performed great ....
