Premium Members Justin Besser Posted January 16, 2017 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 16, 2017 thinking about purchasing a gyro setup, for those vehicle mounted shots and really windy days.. with the 6x6 X-mount configuration is there any way to mount them onto the sled post itself? or would it be better to use 2 seperate ks6 so as to have the ability to spread the mass ? new with the idea of gyros, so looking for any information, have already read previous posts on this.. Premium Members axel ebermann Posted January 16, 2017 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 16, 2017 Not to discourage you from buying Gyros. I love Gyros. But with all the downfalls as startup time, noise, weight etc. - have you considered the Betz Tools Wave as an alternative ?Most people mount the 6x6 gyros on the bottom of the sled. Which works. But unless your camera weighs a ton you will be hopelessly bottom heavy. Which is not necessarily a bad thing for those 'windy day' shots - but sometimes a little limiting.Or in other words: With a 6x6 you are adding a lot of weight in one spot on the sled which is tricky to counterbalance. As for 2 x Gyro vs 6x6: With two gyros you would have to find a matched pair. Otherwise the two gyros might start working against each other. Never done that but I imagine it to be a little tricky... Premium Members Quaid Cde Baca Posted January 16, 2017 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 16, 2017 Hey Justin. I'm in the process of picking up my own 6 x 6. Through manta test days I found the best option ideally is center mounted inter the post on a gen 3 rack with the optical support mount but expensive there in doing an intersex plate from Alan and getting a gen 4 rack and using the AB mount under the post. Easy to balance Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Brad Smith
I have the ks6. Yes they are heavyish when mounted on the bottom of the sled, but fine if you're flying an Alexa or heavier, when I use them with an F55 and zoom lens, I mount them on top of the camera. With 2 batts on the bottom of the sled the gyros on top with the f55 flies beautifully.
Premium Members WillArnot Posted March 27, 2017 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 27, 2017 Love my KS4's. Can mount 3 on the sled and not be in ridiculous weight territory. It is somewhat established knowledge now that an 'X' configuration works very well. The 3rd axis to complete the magic combo I mount on top of camera, same axis as camera, but tilted up or down at a 45degree angle. This adds up to the perfect intersection and effect of all 3 gyros. You get the most complementary effect of stabilization, and yet require the least effort to 'break' the inertia in order to actually operate the frame. Nobody mentions clamping the gyros on the center post? I quickly went away from mounting gyros to bottom of sled and have for many many years clamped the gyros at opposing 'X' positions, to the center post halfway between the gimbal and the bottom of sled. Works an absolute treat. Hardware is extremely lightweight, minimal and rigid. If your mounting hardware has flex you are defeating the purpose!
