Premium Members Michael Stumpf Posted February 25, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 25, 2006 So, I've been VERY lucky in my 13 years in this business to NOT have to really work in cold or even moderate rain. I've, of course, worked under rain towers or in light drizzle or sprinkling conditions but never cold constant rain. Well, my luck has finally run out. Monday we are suppose to be getting a pretty big storm coming in and we are shooting "rain or shine" and of course, it's a big steadicam day. I've always gotten by with a basic oversized rain coat over the clothes and a hole cut out so the arm and vest socket blocks can meet. But I'm thinking I'm going to need a bit more for Monday. Sooo, can anybody recommend a great pair of waterproof shoes/boots that are comfortable to operate in (again, in the past I've just brought an extra pair of shoes that I'd change into once the others got wet) and can be worn all day in rain and still keep my feet dry? Warm, dry and comfy. They have some great waterproof stuff with out the thinsulate that you might want to check out. The beauty of cycling gear is that it strives to be low profile or form fitting which helps when strapped into a harness. For feet in the cold, at temps from 45*F down to about 15*F, I recommend TNF Chilkats with proper wicking boot socks. For feet at temps below this, try a pair of Sorels with said wicking boot socks. NO COTTON! For extended duty in standing water, try NEOS overboots over your regular X-trainers or even Chilkats for colder and wetter work. For serious water that has no mercy, try boots from Bogs. Neoprene and great treads for wet, sloppy sets. For headware, try the Seattle Sombrero from Outdoor Research. Never lets me down, snow or rain. I have pulled all this stuff out on my latest feature, "Stiffs," which just wrapped yesterday in Boston. Every day I showed up we had snow including the "Blizzard of '06," which hit on day 6 of a 6-day week. Good luck! Best, Brant S. I went to REI and spent like $470 for new rain gear for myself and hot damn I got lucky again. Knocked off 3 walk and talks with only a VERY light sprinkle of rain that lasted a minute or so. Then it was all dolly work under cover when the downpour began!! Didn't even need to break out the new gear. :D Thanks again, now after all these years, I'm finally prepared with proper rain gear instead of just some lame rain coats. I must have well over a grand worth of foul weather gear (a bit more necessary here) under the attitude that there is no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothes. Of course, I think that is a lot of hog wash because I hate shooting in the rain.... You are lucky. The new rain clothes might get it's first tryout tomorrow (or Monday and Tuesday) as it's suppose to rain here again those days. They are high-top shoes. Looked at the Lowa's, but they were $180 and didn't feel anymore comfortable and I didn't like the styling as well. REI didn't carry the NEOS overboots, but I've seen them and they would work great too. The Chillkats were huge and seemed more appropriate for snow. Premium Members Charles Papert Posted March 8, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 8, 2006 On the subject of "kicks"--I'm breaking in a new pair of Nike Huarache 2K5 shoes (currently on sale at Sports Chalet) which are blowing me away--amazing support, stability and comfort in a lightwight basketball shoe. And speaking of Sports Chalet, they are selling their cold-weather gear at 30% off at the moment--good opportunities to pick those pricey North Face/Columbia etc. stuff for a nice price.
