Hi,

 

I saw the movie and thought it was quite good. I think the problem may be that the movie is still too new. The first time I see a movie I may notice a nice steadicam shot but I try not to look much at that. Now on the 2nd viewing I'm looking mostly for nice shots especially steadi. A few shots I recall were steadicam and they looked nice certainly nothing detracting about them. I would give it a little time to get some feedback when people have seen it again on DVD. Good work on a good movie. Beau

Hey Mike,

First and foremost, if you do not know who Canadian Steve Campanelli is, take a look at the films he has helped bring to the Silver Screen. Apart from being a very talented individual, he is Clint Eastwood's exclusive 'A' Camera/ Steadicam Operator. When Clint won his Oscar for 'Million Dollar Baby', he personally thanked 'Campanelli' in his Oscar acceptance speech - that is how valuavle Steve is to Clint.

 

As for 'Flags of our Fathers' - I saw the film the week it came out, specifically to see Steve's work and yes there are some non-perfect steadicam shots (which very well might be from some second unit operator), but from what I understand, the Academy Award Winner is a one or two take Director, that looks for performance from his actors first and foremost. Once achieved, he moves on. This is one of the reasons he consistently gets his days early and trusts 'his people', such as Steve.

 

There can many reasons that non-perfection reaches a film's final print due to creative decisions made by the Editor, Producer, Studio Exec, or the Director.

 

So indtead of trying to point out a flaw in another operator's work, let's try and figure out what the cause could be, rather than what the result is - it will improve us all!

 

Please do not take this as an attack at your query, but rather a sign of respect for Steve Campanelli's work and all of those great operator's who have come before us.

I know who is Steve Campanelli and the master work that he have done!! My point is that we must discuss everything we have seen in the big screen in order to make this site special and impove us all.
