kip ross
I'm interested in what approach Steadicam operators took regarding putting their 1st sample reel together. I have have several decades production experience (lighting /camera/grip) and a reel for said background. However, no professional production experience with the Steadicam. I'm thinking about shooting a variety of moves through the bookstore/grocery store and like suitable environs following friends going up stairs, down stairs, start/stop etc. Further; I've taken a 2 day workshop and own a Flyer, which I practice with regularly. I'm just concerned that a producer will not be interested if there is nothing glossily produced: Chicken/Egg simile comes to mind: No work without a reel/no reel without the work. As always, any input is appreciated. Thanks and Cheers to a great "07"! Kip Ross
Premium Members Sydney Seeber Posted December 26, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 26, 2006 From someone who's very new at this himself, (I only bought a full sized rig last April) I can guarantee you that if you put your name out there a little, you'll get many, many requests that you work on low/no budget projects... 2-500/day... I get 2-3 inquiries a month from people like this wanting an operator... The downside is, in my experience, these people have no idea what a steadicam is, and have REALLY strange requests... I think the strangest one was when I was asked to follow a drunk, really fat pirate re-enactor down a steep, slippery ravine as he tried not to spill a cup of beer... Premium Members Richard W. Davis Posted December 27, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 27, 2006 Kip, My first reel was a couple(male /female) at a park and I shot a number of different setups of them doing things....stairs, long lens, circling, changes etc... Made a little music video out of it...Got me a bunch of my first jobs. Gotta start somewhere. Also having something to show(making sure you also keep the technical considerations in mind, focus, exposure etc) is far better than having nothing! It proves you did a good job on at least one gig. Best of Luck, Happy New Year, Rich Davis L.A.

Kip "I'll come up with something suitable" Ross Hey Kip, When you start to put the Reel together, maybe start then with the Titel (your name ofcourse) and add then your photo with the Flyer in combi with the Arri !. It is a COOL photo ! Best, Erik
