Premium Members Charles Papert Posted January 12, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 12, 2007 Thanks for posting that Will, it's very illuminating. I've done three shows in a row with Baird Steptoe who I've learned a lot from about the applied science of focus pulling via technology (he's an RDC fan because of the readout, but possibly the HU3 will bring him over, although I don't know how that little screen will be on his, ah, experienced eyes! For the record, I always try to keep the motors far from the witness mark (and preferably on the right side of the camera if possible)! One more wrinkle: Panavision is constantly updating their lens inventory from the inside out, with no indication or change of serial numbers etc. This could be a head-scratcher when it comes to the database. Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted January 17, 2007 Author Moderators Report Share Posted January 17, 2007 Denny, Will, Thanks for posting these great points. Certainly food for thought. I have to confess that I just spent a few days out in the cold shooting with an absurdly stiff 50mm Primo that we had to "help" along every time we calibrated. This on top of a ridiculous shooting schedule made me chuckle to myself about the whole database thing as it seemed so irrelevant at the moment. Yet, I've heard privately from a number of you that you love the idea. Not sure what to say. There have been some very legitimate arguments against it presented here, but I will simply remind you that my original intent was to make a standard naming protocol in the event that such a database were to prove useful. Now I'm on the fence. Again, going back to the shoot I was just on, there is no way the AC could have/would have taken the time to go through a database to chose a lens - it was just get the damn thing working right and get the shot and I couldn't have cared less if he had called the lenses "Hansel and Gretle" or "Sid and Nancy."
