C-Motion

I've been so busy I only have time to surf the web after hours... I'll call Hill today since I've got the day off. I heard that there was a guy at Panavision that was making them, and that they might even still be available through them, but i've had no luck there either. Thanks for all of the help!

hey guys,

now the austrian oppinion   :

worked with the first c-motion (when i did the assistant) and it seemed to be a worthy successor for the genio.

it works great with all videotransmitter systems although it works with the 2.4Ghz.

its a likeable+ very habile 3channel wireless system, with a hugh pool of addware, like the display for the data lenses.

last month a worked 4weeks with arricam and arri datalenses, for this gig i rent a c motion including the c display and we liked it very much (more than the arri one).

maybe i will change my genio in a new c motion- not to be a patriot more to work with great and contemporary focus system.

regards to all

A friend of mine who is an AC bought some components and likes it... exempt for the "Micro Force" which he thinks is very clunky compared to the Preston Micro Force. The Pan handle adapter is plain dreadful.

I was on 2 jobs where the production rented the unit, Dalsa is the only one in town that I know of that owns the C-motion, and both times the 1st AC asked me to use my Preston instead... They could have saved some cash and actually give it to me... oh well.

I looked into it when I was initially looking to upgrade from a BFD. Arri dropped the ball as well as Scorpio when I asked for info... And the first C-motion units that where floating around town where less then user friendly... It might have changed, I hope.

As I see it. The C-Motion is a little fancier then the Arri FF... as it's basically a knock off... the user interface is identical as the same guys designed both units. No sure how well it works with Panavision Lenses... which could be a problem.

Last time I checked there was still a law suite pending between Arri and C-Motion. I don't know but I would be worried to buy something that could be gone after being sued into oblivion.

Please advice on any updates or news regarding any info provided above.

I saw it about 3 weeks back at Woodland Hills. I was very impressed. Better designed than the Arri and much more compact than the HU3. They will soon be opening up in LA, so you don't have to worry about sending it Europe.

The ergonomic design kills all the competition. The unit also works with most of the digital motors including Panavisions. They are rumored to have Panavisions ear for replacing their focus units. The only thing that Preston has on them is the zoom control.

The updates they are doing to the unit rocks. The screen info will also overlay your video tap feed. And yes, most of the c-motion guys where Arri engineers.

Buck for buck i would go with the C-Motion now that they will have US support. But Dollor to Euro... Preston comes out on top.

How much is the system? In US dollars and with all the stuff you need for your rig on any job?

From their price list distributed at Cine-Gear:

Focus -control Wireless: (Transmitter, receiver, Heen motor and cables) $19,212

Zoom-control (cabled): Control, Heden motor, cables): $9,390

Zoom-control wireless: (transmitter, receiver, Heden motor and cables): $17,842

C3-set: (transmitter, receiver, 3 Heden motors): $30, 246

Complete set ( C3-set plus ramping and LCD display): $43, 901

I've left a lot of the included doodad's (carrying case, batteries, marking rings) off to save typing. Suffice it to say each package contains pretty much everything you'd need (or want).

Jim " I gotta raise my prices" Bartell

NOOOO!!! Jim... don't do that. I've got to say that you have a SOLID product with a great market share. A lot of people can't afford to leap into those 'luxury automobiles' so to speak... just to make an AC happier.

PS: oh god... i just realized i have a surrogate wife!

The problem is that the only guy you make happy with this system is your AC. Sure there are others and sure it can do a lot of stuff, but what you need in basic is a device that pulls your focus and or Iris. I cant raise my price becose i have the more expensive follow focus kit. So in my opinion those prices are way to high and i would prefer the bartech any day. No i dont own one, but the day my famous benz fails i order the bartech. I only wish there was a smaller and perhaps easyer reciever and one handunit for 2 channels. ;)
