How do they Snap Zoom while operating???

If you've ever seen "The Shield" on FX you know they have a very run and gun shooting style with 16mm cameras. Lots of handheld work with snap zooms. No problems here. However, I've been noticing the use of snap zooms while they are shooting with their steadicam rig! I thought the only way to truly achieve a snap, was to manipulate the zoom ring by hand.

So I am wondering if anyone has done this before while operating their rig. Does the wireless zoom allow the lens to zoom that quick with precise stops that don't ease out? Or is an AC actually grabbing the lens while they are flying?

It's been on my mind for a while, and thought I would ask the guys that know this biz best. Thanks!

You can do snap zooms by engaging a motor to the zoom ring and attaching it to the iris channel or another focus channel. Then someone can throw those knobs at a "snap" pace and the results are controlled yet quick.

Alec, thanks for the quick answer. I didn't realize the motors were that good. I have yet to fly anything with that type of lens control.

I figured there was a big trick to it to get that really snappy movement. I guess my question didn't quite deserve a new topic.

Hi! some abut snap zoom....

When I´ve to do.... Most important person is focus puller. You´ve 3 movs... travelling thrt/out versus zoom out/thrt plus foccus...

Cordinacion is..."The way..." Focus op can do two works... focus+zoom... But he must be corinated with steadicam movement... It´s a very dificult shot (almost for me)... May be did it in 3-4 shot failed by steadicam op.

Best regards

Check out the opening shot of "Serenity". Lots of hand zooms while on Steadicam. Whole shot ( 2 actually, digitally married) extremely well done by Mark Moore.

Snap zooms on the shield were done by hand, by the operators.
