Dynamic Spin and Docking Bracket

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Some of you may know that I have the Provid, and with it I got a standard docking bracket, but can't check the dynamic balance as it's too close to the post, so I'm trying to get hold of (cheapish  ) the longer version so I can save myself the hassle of checking it when it's on the arm!!

Hope someone can help!

TIA

check out the catalogs from grip equip companies (ie Matthews, Norms, American etc...) for their off-sets. I'm not sure I'd trust them for heavy cameras on a full sized rig, but for a provid it should be fine. But as TJ said, a machine shop might be the best solution.

Hi Jason

have you seen this device called the Mickey ?

http://www.baer-bel.de/Web/index2.htm

After you have set the rig up with this there is generally no need to do a spin test as you can be confident the rig is in reasonable dynamic balance.

If you would like a demo please give me a call.

I repesent this and other Baer Bel products in the UK

Joe,

Only by spinning the sled you are able to tell if it is in dynamic balance or not. The centrifugal forces only occur to the sled when panning. The Mickey only ?works? in one case. The monitor c.g. and the batteries c.g. are at same distance from the cameras c.g.. This brings the cameras c.g. exactly over the center post. Now you are able to static balance the sled horizontally and achieve something like dynamic balance as well.

Search the forum 2003 or download the ?Dynamic Balance Primer? by Jerry Holway. It gives a detailed view of the subject.

My 2 cents to Mickey

Hi Benjamin

I have a Baer Bel sled a Mod 111 and an Ultra. If you do the initial set up with the Mickey balancing the various masses fore and aft and side to side then make some educated guesses re placement of the monitor then when I put any of my rigs on I can be reasonably sure it will be pretty well balanced statically and dynamically. The point is the Mickey will help you get pretty close you can still do the spin test of course if you feel like it but for all practical purposes it is balanced.

As Jerry Holway suggests if it is out of dynamic balance a quick tweak of the camera, about .75"behind post, and battery should help and this should take minutes. To quote Jerry Holway he also suggests that the monitor and battery and other masses should be lined up "all one has to do is keep the c.g.s in one vertical plane" The Mickey can help to achieve all the above recommendations from Jerry Holway. I am no expert on all this I just know from experience that the Mickey works for me.

Might be worth mentioning again I have an interest in Baer Bel products

Cheers

Joe
