Here's a link to a trailer for the feature I just shot in Nairobi, Kenya. This was my second feature shot on the Canon 5D MK II, my first feature was 10 years ago shot on super 16 and never got finished... so this will be my DP debut.

Fantastic looking trailer. i'd like to hear about how you used that camera. Lenses? Dolly? Steadi? Crane? HH? Double system sound? Size of CF cards and how long were you able to record?

BTW, I'm in Savannah for a couple months. Drop me a line if you are in the area.

Small world, I went to school with Arm (he still goes by Arm, yes?), just saw this trailer on Facebook! Good stuff.

Brian |-)~

Yes he does, I got Arm on as editor and he likes to grab the camera and boy did I let him have it... hate to DP and operate at the same time.

Hey Doc,

We used all of the toys at one point. Stuck the A camera in the Redrock DSLR rig with a hand made rig that Arm had made before hand... it worked great, mostly HH. Used Skateboard dolly and a Giraffe crane... I also did my first step-off for the opening sequence. But I did trade down to a Flyer instead of hauling all my Ultra 2 gear across the pond.

As far as the lenses, we used three zooms, 18-35mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm all f2.8 Canon zooms with gear attachments for the follow focus and Preston. Hated the Preston on those lenses because they don't have stops and the ring will continue to rotate. So I showed the AC how to use the limiter on the HU3.

8GB on the CF cards was about 8min and yes we had dual system sound, although the mic on the camera was used for some b-roll at various times.

So Doc, your down there on the Miley Cyrus flix? If your not busy next weekend, come on up, I'm shooting a 48 hour project on Saturday.

Hi Alfeo,

that looks great. How did you like working with the D5 as an A camera? Do you have pics to share? I'd love to see it in "studio" mode and Steadicam mode.

Aaron

Thanks Aaron,

I just hope the story hold together. It was the 5D and it was our A & B cameras. The following thread has the steadicam config... I took a flyer instead of my big rig.

http://www.steadicamforum.com/index.php?showtopic=9831

The biggest change was when the manual settings became available near the end of my shoot... THANK GOD!!!!

We had to rest the freaking camera after each roll. This was done by covering the lens to force the ISO up to 3200 and then it would drop the f-stop to a 2.8 and the frame rate would start to drop then. You could lock in the exposure at that point. Remove your light blocking object (hand, grip, eyebrow) and relock the exposure on the scene. This would sometime be dead on or close to my desired metered exposure. The click wheel on the camera allowed a ±2 Stop range in your preferenced steps of 1/3 or 1/4's (if I recall correctly.) Again, this had to be done each time you rolled, false start or actual take... very aggravating. So the firmware fixed that problem, but I'm sure I lost a few hours in the schedule because of that.

I'll see if I can find a good studio config shot.

The studio rig we used was the Red Rock DLSR ( http://www.redrockmicro.com/redrock_dslr.html ) which I moded by cutting the two top rails in half and used the other halves on the side, but If you do try that, make sure you can easily change both the cards and the battery with all your lens options. Yeah, we had a few two minute battery changes.
