Pilot Monitor Upgrade

I have a SteadiCam Pilot:

Im interested to know if its possible to upgrade the existing 5.8"WS monitor to a Monitor that has an electronic leveller and is generally brighter and clearer?? Also, need a monitor shade.

thanks,

I believe that the Steadicam Pilot's monitor uses the standard 1/4"x20 threads to attach to the rig, so it should be quite easy to attach another one. The problem is getting a monitor that won't cost half (or more) of what your whole rig did that has the features you want. For instance, a Marell digital level and frameline generator runs for 749 GBP. And, a new transreflective (more sun viewable) LCD from Marshall would run you about $2000 in its base configuration. This is all not to mention the added weight of those parts over a quite lightweight little LCD like the one on your rig, which could upset the balance of such a light rig. Perhaps a couple of solid bubble levels and a monitor shade for the current monitor would suffice as an easier and much cheaper solution?

Here is a link to photos of a sun shade I made myself. Easy to do and attaches with Velcro.

Yes I was wondering about the balance.. I think the Pilot only goes up to about 10lbs. To be frank, I don’t think the 5.8"WS monitor is as good as many make out! The image looks distorted, grainy, dull and just disappears under direct sunlight. Im always struggling to see it clearly outside.

As for the monitor shade, yes I think I will DIY.. Couldn’t find anything that would fit it that is available.

Spirit levels? Well I yet to find one small enough to fit between the monitor bracket (directly under the monitor).. ill keep searching.

thanks.

You can get little T shaped levels from DIY stores $5 or less - I have two - one on the stage for setup and a second taped to the top of the monitor (horizon only)

My pilot monitor is poor in the sun - im flying an EX1 and balance it with its own monitor sticking out - that on camera monitor has a small but deep DIY shade on it, so I can look at that when the 'proper' monitor goes invisible - at that point one loses view of the ground and compromises proper operational posture however

I had to dig in the menu to activate both monitors

Efforts at DIYing a shade for the larger monitor have not worked for me - you end up building a sail that cant be packed away
