Just what you did for the last x years. Perhaps some examples too. But overall it looks great. I am not into fancy flash stuff, but thats just me. I always think clients want to see what you can/did and dont want to spend hours looking for it. I agree you should have a formal resume. I think you should have a demo reel and it should be super easy to find. I'd consider making your buttons bigger instead of the small text on the bottom left. Personally (and this is just me) I would use my name .com instead of spin echo industries.com... It's hard enough to get sombody to remember your name but to remember spin, echo (spelled ecco or echo???) and remember industry (or industries???) and was it com or net or tv or, or, or... you get my point. Here is mine: www.mikemcgowan.net (and I tell people, my name dot net and they still sometimes get it wrong). I also think you do right by keeping it short as I don't think the attention span is typically too long for watching demo reels (especially when they have 5 of them to watch). For those of you that are new to this, Eric's reel does another thing really well, it shows steadicam specific shots. The text size and navigational button size on your site are very small. Perhaps you should make graphics for the navigation. I use graphics for most of my site including the text. Graphic based text can load fast for most computers/internet connections and offers many design possibilities in Photoshop. I offer a text-only version of everything as well. Try viewing your website on different browsers, computers, and yes, the iPhone. You may find design flaws and incompatibilities in your site that you'll want to fix. Which brings up another question....for online reels, what video format do you guys prefer? Mine is .mp4 and defaults to Quicktime to play, but some people still tell me it won't load. I haven't tried it myself, but you could probably use a site like Vimeo (seems to have decent quality flash video) to encode and then just embed the linked video into your web page. I prefer Quicktime. Very compatible. Very nice quality. Encode with H.264. Important note for web page embedding: In the settings window prior to encoding, check the box marked "Prepare for internet streaming" and also select "Fast Start - compressed header". Some people can't open QT and some can't open AVI (although that is a smaller and smaller group of people every day). Flash is on the site so it's size and quality are under your control not the person opening the file. As for time to load, I'm sure mine takes several minutes on a slower computer/internet connection. I just have so much movement in mine that if it wasn't a higher rez file it would be all pixls. I figure if they are going to bother to look the resolution might as well be decent quality. In previous generations of my web site, I had both Quick time and Windows files in both small and large sizes, I felt like one imbeded flash file was just cleaner. Lately they have gotten very busy and have been suffering technical issues a lot. Your video may play back in slow motion after waiting a half hour to upload it. Premium Members Sydney Seeber Posted July 20, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 20, 2009 Flash is probably the most compatible format I will concur, after encoding videos for the interwebs for maybe 15 years now, it's almost always come down to Flash for the last 10 if you wanted to keep your links to a minimum... For a long time, I always had Quicktime and .wmv files on my site, then a Flash version for those who didn't want to download codecs/software. 3 links for 1 video, because Flash kind of sucked a few years ago, but everyone could view it... These days, Quicktime and software encoding on PCs has become even more difficult with the advent of the many variations of h264 containers, or wrappers, if you will. You've got two different decoders for the most part... Quicktime's version, which is clearly Mac friendly but will work on a PC, and Mainconcept, which Adobe went with. There are others, but not nearly as widely used. They both can encode video in h264, but they're incompatible with each other, and it gets worse by the day it seems. Flash, owned by Adobe now of course, has (Sort of) 3 different codecs available when you encode, and h.264 is one of them, meaning my Flash video will be the same quality as my Quicktime or various Mainconcept containers, but the Flash container is embedded on my site already. This has been the case for less than 2 years, so it's relatively new. Flash is on like 98% of computers out there, so I'm good... The one down side is portable/mobile devices, but that's coming on line. My site's a mess, it still has all of the older .wmv and .mov files, but I'll get around to encoding all of them in the new Flash eventually... They offer unlimited webspace, unlimited bandwidth, and unlimited websites for $7.95 per month. I use 5GB of that and 25 GB / month bandwidth (and host a bunch of friend's websites too). I never had a problem, and they are friendly and helpful when I screw up. Some of my clips are 1.5 Mb/s, and they play immediately from everywhere I've tried. In short, I recommend them!
