UK short film undercutting

Just got undercut for a day on a short film which is mostly being crewed by NTFS people - someone's doing the steadicam work, including all travel expenses, for £150. ($244)

 

I hope if they're reading this, they realise that they're ultimately just shooting themselves and the rest of us in the foot.

I've just compeleted a day on a shoot for a London client - the shoot was in Manchester. After putting in my quote, I was told by the company that I'd been undercut by £300 by another Op (London based, who would travel up to do it, and then travel back down...all included...)

 

After reiterating that the client knows me, my work, my kit and the standards I will bring, I told them I would not drop my rate.

 

It's horrible out there at times.

Thats pretty unpleasant

 

Being new to this forum and operating in general, Im at the other end of the scale in comparison to you guys.

 

As such I know, that my kit and my experience is not as extensive as yours.

 

But I would also be worried about taking jobs and undercutting fellow operators. I would like to think I have some integrity plus show the experienced operators the respect they have earned.

 

As I am based in the UK, can you offer any guidance on the way to best traverse this minefield? After all, I would be able to learn a lot from you guys, and have no desire to rub people up the wrong way :)

Hi Ed,

Was it a ntfs film? If so I know there budgets are super tight. I did a favour last year of £250 a

day all in as it was a Favour to my focus puller. But remember it's not just the DP an the director who are being educated, it's also the producers etc who are going to try and squeeze every last penny out of the budget. They probably just kept ringing around. The short film scene isn't a good representation of undercutting as it's full of amateurs and no budget prods. Having said that the industry has become amazingly cut throat as were all vying for the same jobs as the industry falls apart around our ears. It will get better once the economy rights itself but at the moment unfortunatly it has become

free for all. The union is worse then useless and only worth the public liability insurance. It is a

difficult time at the moment for us all.

On a lighter note, it was probably Rich who under cut you.... Apparently he will work for

£1.20 plus a packet of dry roasted peanuts....that's kit n all

Not all NFTS films are tight budget, I have a friend who worked on one recently (not steadicam, he was a DIT). It was shot with the Arri D21 with Hawk anamorphics and they built a set that they flooded with four feet of water. 10 grand budget apparently.
